Sony F3 motion blur

You definitely have a shutter speed issue. It is easy to assume that you have an auto setting somewhere, but I also assume that anyone buying a professional camera would know not to have anything auto.
I would definitely make sure that you have the shutter on and try shutter at 1/250 or higher. If the shutter is working properly the footage should look like Saving Private Ryan.
If it doesn't try switching to ntsc 24p and do the same as suggested before. If the 24p looks as it should or If it is still stock in slow shutter, take back to the dealer.

This might sound a bit daft, but check to see if you have any kind of prerecord, or slow shutter, or anything that could disable the shutter switch. it looks like its on "off" of a 360 degree shutter. Check that your shutter is set to Angle, and set to 180 degrees.

Hi guys, many thanks to all of you for your help. I have a shoot coming up this weekend and I will be giving all my settings a good look. I'll let you know how I get on.

Fortunately, its a solo project not a proper gig. I did run a check on the camera though. Around the 1/250, I do get the SPR effect, both in 25p and 24p

So then I have to assume that at 1/50th/sec or 180 degrees you should be ok also. Are the lights florescent?

EDIT: You meant sharp also? Right?

The clip of the guy walking in the bike shop was under fluorescent lights. The shot of the musician was mostly daylight. I'm afraid I meant Saving Private Ryan.

I am viewing the footage in the US on YouTube on an LCD refreshing at 60Hz and who knows what YouTube is doing to the video. I suspect that the camera is probably recording properly, but the viewing mechanisms for how that 25p is getting translated around is the problem.

It looks the same here in PAL-Land with 50Hz equipment. Seems to be the same issue the PAL FS100 shows.

I stumbled over one thing, when I transcode my 25p Material (FS100) to Cineform and look into the metadata in FirstLight, it says "shutter speed 30" (camera was definitely at 50 while recording - I rechecked it twice). If I import the AVCHD in PP the meta data says 50.

I have no idea, but something is going on here. Actually the 25p material out of both cameras looks a bit like 24P brought to 25P by some software trick in the camera that doesn't´t really work. 50P and 50i material looks good though.

I don't think there is a 50p upgrade....

Or 60p for that matter. That isn't the kind of thing you change in firmware. That's to do with the recording of xdcam.

That said, the 720p that comes from the F3 is far sharper than a varicam, and looks phenominal. It intercuts with 1080 material wonderfully.

It is indeed. Lets hope there will be a 50p upgrade though. I know the FS100 got it/is getting it in firmware form if I'm not mistaken.

If wishes were horses...

The FS100 is a fundamentally different camera, with AVCHD internal recording. Firmware updates can only activate features supported by existing hardware.

In the case of the PMW-F3, the internal recording is XDCAM-EX, which is based on MPEG-2. To the best of my understanding, it is simply not feasible or possible to get 1080 50p or 60p from XDCAM-EX MPEG2 hardware.

And, the PMW-F3 does support 1080 50p and 60p output for external recording. Perhaps we should really be wishing for cheaper dual link/3g external recorders...

This thread has been a bit frightening for someone planning on a Pal camera purchase. Can anyone owning a Pal camera show 25p motion without the slow shutter look? Thanks!
