Well what do we have here? We've just been handed a picture of what we're told is Sony's EX3 prototype 3D camera, with changeable lenses and a penchant for capturing life in the third dimension. That's unfortunately all we really know at this point, but if this two-eyed beaut does go to market (and we hear that it most certainly will), it looks like Panasonic's 3D camcorder will have some healthy competition. And hey, we're all for having more options.

who needs that? i'm sure porn industry will be the first to use these cameras... other than that, not overly interested in 3d...

Looks nice. Probably gonna be expensive like the Panasonic HVX-3D-camera, but maybe a good rental for specific projects that need 3D. At least for the next 5 years, I don't see the need to have to own a 3D camera and the need for one on a daily basis.

I think once there is a more established delivery method, that more filmmakers, event shooters, as well as commercial-corporate & music video shooters will become more interested in 3D.

I thought we made the big jump in formats when things went from DV/SD to HD/HDV/AVC-HD etc...

... but of course now we've got 3D around the corner.

I just hope that if 3D really takes off over the next 5-10 years and becomes the standard, that current and not-to-distantly past clients call me up and demand a 3D version of their video. That's gonna suck having to be like, "sorry, but I didn't shoot it in 3D".

3D isnt going to become a standard. Its a fad at the moment and it will come to end in due time. It will most likely remain for such things such as kids CG movies, or the occasional event film.

But overall, the current backlash against 3D especially from 2D conversions and the higher (and continually raising) ticket prices have gained more press than I could have hoped.

I'm with funkycolda - my bet is it's photoshopped.

As to whether 3D's happening - my vote is yes. Swag is 5 years but could be a lot sooner if home 3d theater takes off. Don't know how we'll beat the glasses thing for more than 1 off viewing - if you've got an idea you could be very rich ...

Shutter vs polarized . . . I can see where shutter may have technical advantages but I can't imagine the public standing for it. My call - shutter will be the next betamax.

We need a pool on when RED announces.

I hope 3D dies again... it's ruining filmmaking. It's no longer about what can you do to make a good film but more about what can you do in a film that will look cool in 3D. Seriously, it's crap and I hate the whole idea. 3D films do nothing more than remind me that I'm sitting in a theater, the last thing that I want in a film.

Update: A trusted source just chimed in with some specs, and it's looking like Sony's basically just crammed the guts of two PMW-EX3 studio cams into a single shell for this prototype. That's not a bad thing: behind those proprietary hot-swappable lens cartridges are the same three half-inch CMOS eyeballs that stream 4:2:0 MPEG-2 video at 1080p to SxS memory cards at 35Mbps per eye, or send uncompressed 4:4:4 footage over a new pair of HD-SDI outputs. Our source was pretty excited about how close together those eyes were, too -- he whispered something about an industry-first 1.5-inch interocular distance, before vanishing into the darkness without a word on price or availability.

agreed. not to mention the horribly styled glasses...

We should have designer 3D glasses soon so styling will not be a problem. Red Digital Cinema 3D Glasses. Who could claim experience in digital cinema AND eyewear design? Apple will make these also. If 3D TVs become standard, this might be a larger market than sunglasses:) Everybody will wear them at all times, just to save the headache from the 3d material that will be everywhere, in ads, store windows, restaurant menus. And then, people will want to get more expensive ones, the latest model, the latest specs. The sun specs do not change much, so it all comes down to styling. 3D glasses will be different. Those will have compatibility problems with new material!

3d?

3d?

I went and watched Avatar in cinema for the 3D effect. I think 3D is the last straw of the cinema business to draw us back into movie theaters.

But the most funny thing was that the shallow depth of field addicts will suffer :Drogar-Love(DBG):

3D and those overdone shallow depth of filed junkies wont become friends! It looks so shitty and shows how our eyes do not have such shallow DOF. While we might have gotten used to the DOF games in movies ( I think they are overdone in 99% of the cases), in 3D they simply look awful!

I doubt 3D is going to have any future in the low budget department! Its only going to sell to the amateur show-off.

perhaps, yet there is still a large part of the audience that is not ready for 3D, nor really is interested in it. I for one have never worn glasses, and only wear sunglasses in extremes; i have no intention of wearing them while watching television or movies etc.

On another note, would your first name be Panagiotis by chance? that is the only short form involving otis i could think of; plus i too am a Panagiotis.
