Sony EX1 Optimization Kit Now Available

You know? I just don't think so. I think that it could also use a custom achromat treatment as there's going to be different lens characteristics as well.

We see that the Letus performs the best on an XHA1. You could almost call the standard Achromat an XHA1 achromat but perhaps even that can be improved.

The XY adjustment? I'm sure it will help and I would like BOTH. I also think that the HVX200 specific achromat would be nice.

Matt says yes, though. Can anyone show examples? Even hackneyed? I'm still at a loss as to how XY adjustment on the unit would help other than getting the lens to the center.

The lens will still battle with the achromat in terms of directional light and spherical properties, or am I way off base?

well... I experience more edge softness on the left, so an xy adjustment would definetively help. If it's enough is another question.

Oh I think it would help. Just I'm not sure if it would fix all issues. It'd be a combination of both.

There are severe HVX edge sharpness issues on the LEX adapters I've personally played with, evidenced as well by many other folks' screen grabs here and elsewhere. Not quite as severe as the EX1 (was), but still very nasty. Image centering is also part of the problem, exacerbating the e2e further. Tim Naylor sold his LEX due to these issues.

I gotta say, Tim Naylor's stills were drastic. Ask IanD if he's ever seen anything like that with his Letus Extreme.

Not discounting that there are edge softness issues, because I am ready to fork over cash money for an HVX200 specific achromat. Just sayin', mines was only that drastic with a 17mm strapped to it. And that 17mm isn't a good one, either.

I've been talking to Hien and he has informed of 2 things that made me feel much better.

1. The new achromat will work both on an HVX and a Sony EX so one needn't switch between cameras. i didn't ask about others but I presume at least will also work.

2. It will also work on units that don't have screw out achromats. A little more trouble to replace but no big deal at all.

This is great and interesting news
Id like to see the Letus team sanction the testing of this new acromat on both the EX and the HVX. Some charts, some moving pictures, low light stuff, outdoor stuff,etc..

Testing must and should be done to ensure a generic positive result on any camera system that would be "optimized" with this acromat.

If the HVX doesnt need its *own* custom acromat so to speak, Id opt in for the new one AS SOON AS I saw compelling footage demonstrating such.

Now, if we could just get (dis)assemby instructions for the LEX id be happy, I surely dont want to have to send mine in every time it gets hair and some dust specs in it!! :)

The EX-1 Achromat does NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH THE HVX.

It is EX-1 Specific. It can be USED with the HVX, but at the moment it is unknown what changes in the HVX image will occur when using this achromat.

Please, use this thread to discuss the HVX achromat possibilities. These adapter manufacturers (or a couple) don't have time to scour each thread. Using this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=125190 Will help rally customer thoughts into a place so that they can be pointed directly to it.

This thread is about the EX-1, there's one started about the HVX possibility. Please use it.

Kholi,
Hien told me it will work on both which I was concerned about because my adapter doesn't have a screw off a achromat so it is more of a pain to change. I assume he meant it will work well on both, but I won't know anything until i receive it of course.
You're right in that there is no indication it will do anything about offset issues.

Exactly. It will work on both, just like the original achromat will work. It won't compensate for HVX200 lens design but it will work.

That's my point as well. Good to be cleared up before people go batsh!t again.

.

Uhm... do you know this to be a fact? The leneses may very well share the same characteristics in regard to this very problem (e2e sharpness w/ LEX), even though they are not the same.

Now for a fact: The threads on the EX1 is 77mm and the HVX is 82, so it won't fit without a stepdown ring. (Cause there is a spacer as well as the achromat in the update, or am I wrong?) You'll also need the 77mm thread-ring for the letus...

I believe these kind of statements would be best left to
a)Letus
b)Someone who has tested this on an HVX. (any EX1 users that have an HVX wanna post up :) )

I can see where the excitement is coming from, but Kholi, I think you are making some bold statements right now with no basis.

I was told that it didn't. That's where I get my info from.
If it does fix something, good. I was told differently. In FACT if it does, then that's even better because I won't have to wait to buy one. I have NO PROBLEM with eating my words, but I was told that it wouldn't. Lenny will be the one to find out if it makes a difference probably. Let's just hope for the best.

Bring it on if it does. :D

Can you use the new letus achromat with sgpro flip bundle? It uses the same flip unit as letus so it would make sense. It would be great to get rid if the ex1 problems with sgpro also...

Drastic? What are you trying to imply? Drastic as in they were wild and crazy or just drastic as in strong measures were taken? I constantly see you discount these tests as "drastic". Without an objective comparision, it holds as much weight as saying they were "grave and nasty" too.

Show me charts/tests to the contrary. I've yet to see charts from anyone else to refute my reults. If they're out there, I'd like to see them. It would mean either my HVX was off or my LE. And I don't mean tests set at a compromised focus or vistas of trees and lakes. I made my chart the size of a wall because I wanted the focal distance close to the average distance I'm usually set at (4-8 feet), not an 8" x 14" chart in which I'm a 1-2" away. Perhaps this factor may very the E 2 E tests people get with small charts. Not sure.

There are loads of folks who were as content as kittens with the EX's, myself included. After viewing Phil Blooms shots of London, my SG/LE shootout, and some other footage, it further supported my elation. But then I had to shoot something where I had to frame important narrative info in the edges and corners of the frame. With an actor in the middle and some framed to the edges, the comparison was there for all to see (unforunately the director too). They were not something I would've noticed until I had a job that required critcal focus across the frame. That's what prompted me to to these E2E tests to confirm or solve the issue.

I am absolultely grateful to the Letus crew for making a fix. I'll put my money down this week. I will be doing a series of drastic tests on an HVX and EX1 before I take it out on a job. I'm also ecstatic that Hien informed me this new achromat will take care of the E 2 E issues I had with my HVX as well.

Eitherway, before judging my actions as "drastic" show me what you're judging it against.

Tim

PS.
Emron and Ted Spencer's experience further corroborate my results.

Wtf are you talking about?

I said your edge softness was drastic. Get a grip. I've reported the same softness but only with the Zeiss Standard Primes. IanD also reported having no experience with the edge softness you got on your unit. The most softness I've ever seen is my crammy 17-35mm Tamron @ 17mm.

Luis has charts of his unit and I didn't see the edge softness you got with your tests.
