Sony DSC-RX10 II Announced: 4k internal recording, 1080P up to 960 FPS, and lots more

I think one of these may be in my future. I currently shoot on a Samsung NX1 but the high price of kitting it out is making me second guess its value for my purpose. I'm starting a documentary shoot soon and the RX10II seems like a perfect camera for that type of shooting. I kinda think of it as a baby Canon C100 lite!

The only things I think I'm missing from say my NX1 would be that shallow depth of field, ability to swap lens to achieve better results in low light environments and some resolution. I gain, ND's, XLR audio input capability with the Sony xlr-k2m xlr box, fast lens, more slo-mo options, parfocal zoom lens, builtin OIS, SLog, creative options.

Am I missing something?

Anyone know for sure what exactly the xlr-k2m does? Does it have preamp circuitry of its own or is it strictly interfacing to/controlling the camera's audio circuit and routing power to phantom? The seeming lack of any typical audio specs suggests the latter, IMHO.

Actually it's quite useful, dare I say almost essential component to the RX10II for documentary shooting.

From B&H it is...

The Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter Kit with Microphone allows you to connect professional-quality microphones, mixing consoles, and sound studios to cameras equipped with a Multi-Interface Shoe, including Sony's a7 series, RX series, and select camcorders. It features a 2-channel XLR adapter box with independent controls that provide recording level adjustment, attenuation, and wind noise reduction. Mic/Line input switching for each channel is also provided to simplify post-shooting editing. A built-in mic holder lets you mount the included ECM-XM1 shotgun microphone. Also included in this kit is a fuzzy wind screen and a zippered carrying case.

Yes..I read that. And the question still remains...especially at that price. Consider $150 ish can get you a DR60D..that doesn't have to stay attached to hotshoe. You could use it as a preamp for straight ahead bits and as recorder when additional tracks helpful. or dual level recording might save yer butt in unpredictable situations. For the money, might be worth considering a sound devices mixpre. For what it appears to be and the price of the RX10II itself, this adapter seems overpriced unless the included mic is pretty good.

You absolutely don't need the Sony device, it's overpriced. I like it and would probably buy it, but your right, you could use the DR60DII or any other audio interface like a Zoom H5, H6, etc, etc to do a similar job.

Pulled the trigger on this bad boy today, I couldn't resist! Anyone interested in a Samsung NX1?

I flipped flopped and cancelled the RX10II order until at least the 1st units get into consumers hands.

Frankly... I've never thought about that... To see someone to trade-in a NX1 going really smaller sensor size... OK, a new 16mm digital-like format, so you're apologized ;-)

...which anything on the paper means too little when we start to compare sensors and puddings...

It is the NX500* with the new bitrate increase update via firmware -- HEVC/H.265 and... the RX100 IV** instead but says a bit why specs say too little, though...

I just meant the end price and simplicity/run and gun-ability with on-board audio are more his concern. I like that pocket footage though...hard to know what was done in post. I look forward to footage with the cam in question...hopefully more than the usual exterior stuff.

I see the anamorphic glass as an determinant value-added for that outcome there, hence the advantage for a interchangeable lens body. Post is always implicit each step you show up : ) On the leftover, Johnnie Behirie's RX100IV footage is a good hint for the possibilities with the bigger brother, even though the latter is slower at wide end. It is really interesting for doc work anyway.

To those seeking an interesting solution for documentary stuff, I find in this piece of good glass especially if added to FF + new Sony's AF offer, a particular bargain:

Hi Emmanuel! Yes, I have that pice of glass in account, too. With the alpha-serie there is additional digital lens correction. So besides being parfocal, there is no vignetting and close to zero distortion. As a full frame lens it looks like f2,8 @ super 35mm which is very good having in account the wide focal range. And the internal IS cooperates with the 5-axis sensor IS of the 7s R II - I'm curious if that yields good results, too.

Bloom was given an RX10 II and an RX100 MK IV and reviewing them. Check his posts put in the next few days. As well as posts on the C300II and C100II.

Hi Joe, how are you? : ) As you fairly hinted, me too! I've actually placed my wondering here addressed to those fortunate who can already test it on field:

E :-)

My dear Emanuel, I'll have an eye on that. Cheers!
Nice to hear from you, Joe (E :-)

Take a look on this beauty (shot by Bloom on RX100 IV though, but serves the goal):

Here's another contribution never seen before at this acquisition size...
