Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 III puts emphasis on lens reach and video capabilities

If a person doesn't understand the camera, that's the kind of review they are going to write.

Anyone who has used 20-30 different cameras in the last 5 years, knows how to play this game already, and understands this industry.

When all else fails, go to Vimeo and see the wonderful pieces people are producing with these "toys".

You are certainly right Mr. Bro.

These RX10 cameras have a ton of features, and they do them all pretty well.
It all comes down to what your PRIMARY need is.
Mine is Image Quality. And these don't cut it up against the other inexpensive cameras I'm using. Of course I sacrifice features with my choices.
Although I agree with John Godden above that Sony may have let the price of this MKIII creep up too high. Because at this price you can get a Samsung NX1 with a kit lens, and I don't think there's much contest there in Image Quality. The NX1 is pretty formidable and also has some pretty high frame rates.

I have worked with some RX10 MKII footage, and I could not get it to do a serious match against the Blackmagic footage from the same job at all. I had to resort to making the RX10 mkII parts into "effect shots"

But I'll be the first to say that if Image Quality is NOT your most important priority - then this clever little bugger really can do a ton of stuff all in one box without much of anything else to carry around with you. And sometimes that's the difference between getting the shot or getting nothing,

Yes, good image quality is subjective to a lot of things. But for the $1,000 I paid, it is quite amazing. Usual disclaimers about not being an Alexa yada yada yada. Colors are pretty accurate with some tweaking, it is super detailed, noise is quite contained and the gamma is pretty bright.

I hope the focus mechanism is updated on the MKIII as the MKII's manual focus sucks to be blunt.

It seems very, very similar to the RX10 II, except the lens is now one stop faster (which is great for low light, but don't expect any big improvements in terms of DoF because it's still deep-DoF-only).

For what it's worth, I'm super happy with my RX100 IV. Image is great (I wouldn't say the NX100 is any better, except if you need shallow DoF), size is incredibly small, I'm already used to the super-tiny controls, and it even has an internal ND filter. This is how it looks in 4K, and this is 1080p60 with a pretty strong color grade.

The big problem with fixed lenses is the lack of a wide end. But 24 mm (FF equiv.) is not bad at all. The other issue with as big a zoom range is that you can't expect fixed aperture. That said, f/2.4 - f/4.0 is not bad... I wouldn't cry if they made it a touch faster at the wide end, but this is not bad at all. Overall, pretty impressive. What's the catch?

For me, the extra 400mm on the lens is not that big of a deal. The MKII with a 24-200mm f2.8 covers a lot of video uses. Beyond 200mm and you get into tripod area and this is not that type of camera imho. Could have some uses but if they fixed the laggy manual focus to a real focus system it would be worth the price of admission to me. And if they had unlimited 1080p recording time... one can wish.

The sensor on the a6300 is about twice the size...
Sony's 1" is 116 mm2. Sony's A6300 APS-C is 366. Both size are for 4:3 photos. They crop for 16:9 4K video.

And most people probably won't load an Alexa LUT ... but some might. It's S-Log2, after all.

Thanks for the numbers! I knew it was a lot larger. Almost three times the size. I should not have said twice the size without knowing for sure.

Boo, still the !$%@!#$% 4 GB or 29 minute limit (at least according to the specs on B&H)! Unusable for certain uses like interviews, events, etc. I would so like to get one of these RX10 cameras (I, II, or III), but for some unknown reason they keep that cursed limit on a $1500 camera... #$%
