Let's see what the Fx9 v3 firmware does next year.
One major question is about stabilized full frame lenses that have some character. I don't mean vintage character, just a bit of mojo like a lot of Canon L glass. The native E mount lenses all look pretty clinical to me, adapted primes and such will have no stabilization, and full frame lenses with IS will be huge for such a small cam (70-200 Canon, for example).
I'm trying to wrap my head around what my lens kit would include if I went this route? My sigma 18-35mm would be out the window since there is no s35 mode in 4k. My mid to longer primes would look pretty shaky with no ibis on such a small/lightweight cradle cam shape.
P.S. I think it might have touch AF, but not tracking. (There's a difference there for anyone reading.)
That describes the difference more clearly than anything else, haha, thank you. I'll remember that when I start getting back into auto focus.Without touch tracking, autofocus critics can reasonably say, "I dont use autofocus because I dont want the camera telling me where to put focus."
Hugely impressive specs, and a great price. I don't think Sony will be selling many FX9s from here on out.
The only things I can really even gripe about are the lack of a locking e-mount (which really does suck), and the camera NOT cropping into S35mm for its HD/2k 240fps (so you know it's going to be nasty, line-skipped mush).
Outside of that though? There just isn't much else to complain about (for me at least).
As far as choosing fx6 vs. fx9 for shooting, do you think it mostly comes down to SDI/battery requirements? As in, fx9 has an extra BNC and should be easier to run larger batteries.
At this price, it's pretty easy to be an fx6 owner/op despite already being heavily invested in other systems.
The size looks perfect, I'd personally keep it as bare bones as possible.
There's never been a better/worse time to be making films etc.
Reasonably in depth overview of the FX6 from good YT Gerald Undone. Some surprising differences to the FX9.

I used the FS5 only once, and it was so horrific to operate that I've never touched one since. If Sony haven't made significant improvements on that front, it's a non-starter to me.
So, basically, you feel like the FX6 will either be close to perfect or it'll be a nonstarter?![]()
Pretty much! Doesn't really matter what a camera's capable of, if you can't easily deploy those features.
Tricky situation, though, isn’t it. The only thing that would annoy me more than having to pay $2.5k to record Raw would be to make it free just after I’d done that. Ouch.
