Sony A7SIII = $3500, 10-bit 4K120p internal, 16-bit 4K60p RAW out

How are the ProRes RAW datarates compared to BRAW? Unless you're a Final Cut user, looks like BRAW makes more sense in terms of cost and support at the moment...

BRAW has adjustable compression and data rates, which is an advantage. It is very fast and smooth on playback because it's partially debayered in camera. This also allows them to bypass RED's patent on in-camera compressed RAW since BRAW is technically by the barest definition not real RAW, but in practical terms it has all the advantages and characteristics of RAW. In rough terms ProRes RAW data rate and file size is about equal to ProRes 422 HQ, and is smooth to edit on both FCPX and Premiere. I haven't tried it on AVID or Edius but ProRes RAW is (or will be) supported on those NLEs.

Currently BRAW is supported on BMD cameras plus the C300II and EVA-1 if you get the BMD Video Assist 12G. Even though anyone can use BMD's SDK to *decode* BRAW, I think *encoding* BRAW is still proprietary to BMD and they haven't licensed this to anyone else. By contrast anyone can license and decode OR *encode* ProRes RAW.

ProRes RAW is not tied to any camera manufacturer and is currently supported on about 12-15 cameras via Atomos, and Atomos claims it will be supported on 30 cameras by end of this year. Currently (or imminently)-supported cameras: Nikon Z6/7, Sony FS5, FS5II, FS7, FS7II, FX9, Canon C300II, C500, C700, Panasonic EVA-1, S1H, Varicam 35, Varicam LT, Z CAM E2, DJI X7.

The Kinefinity MAVO Edge will support internal ProRes RAW, not using Atomos. I don't know how they deal with the RED patent. The DJI X7 seems to side-step the issue since technically it is not internal to the camera but integrated into the Inspire2 airframe SSD package.

For the A7SIII the big question is what 16-bit RAW format will it support. Sony showed a 5" Atomos recorder connected via HDMI. I'd tend to think that might be ProRes RAW since Atomos already has the licensing and tech worked out for the S1H and Nikon Z-series, but we don't know. I just hope it's not a proprietary Sony RAW format which requires conversion with Sony software.

That is what I think as well about the body design. For my uses, I would heavily consider this camera if it were 24MPX or less costly. I could live with the less light gathering if they could deal with the heat. The 12MPX takes it out of the running for a stills system, so that leaves the camera to compete against video only alternatives. The lenses are expensive, so the entire system cost needs to be factored in. If this was a stills candidate then that cost would not be an issue.

Overall I think they knocked it out of the park for its intended design. I agree with Dan, great to see the options we have wanted over the years.

Yeah I think they crippled the resolution so it wouldn't be perfect for photographers. And also to help rolling shutter and heat.

Keep in mind there are good 3rd party lens alternatives- sigma, samyang, tamron

PS: i think this makes an awesome gimbal/B camera for FS7/FX9.

I will not write it off as it is a fantastic camera. Although I did notice 1080p240 did not make cut :( I will wait to see if a GH6 appears and then survey the field. Sadly, my hopes of a multi-bird stone throw have probably been dashed...

Actually it does shoot 1080 240fps. And at 10bit 4.2.2 to boot.
My only complaint. If you are making this a videocam instead
of hybrid (as evidenced by lower res sensor etc) then I’d like
built in XLR and ND. Of course then it competes too well
against the FX9. Plus they can’t add those things later to
a ‘version 2‘ to get us to upgrade. Also where in the
world does the FX6 slot in? Any room left between this
and the FX9????

people are complaining about $3500. forget xlr/nd in this tier. plus they sell an xlr attachment

fx6 looks like a video cam, maybe has a fan, xlr, nd, $6k?

Holy crap the A7SIII AF is bonkers- https://youtu.be/oSl5c6A2e6g

I prefer the R5 colors but I think I'll be able to work with the A7SIII both in camera and in post

It's how the a6400/a6000 is... 21:22 absolutely bulletproof.

And GL always tests them in this room, which is perfection for tests with bokeh lights in the back to look at and see how AF behaves.

Eh, about $7,500 worth of room. Let's split the difference down the middle. $7,000 sounds just about right ... whenever it comes out. If at all.

PS. According to DPR, 60p is good for about an hour. I am not sure any of the early testers stretched it as far.

The Atomos Ninja V will be able to record take the 16-bit linear raw and record it as a 12-bit log raw file. Up to at least 4K 60fps:

After watching so much Canon footage for this past month, more than ever in my life between the R, the II and the III...I think I have finally developed the Canon color science biased for the first time in my life (and I was a very heavy Sony shooter along with Canon forever).

Even in the B&H video, I really saw a difference.

Thanks. I found it on the Sony site. The 240fps is in slow & quick motion. But this note is attached - "Number of effective pixels: 1408 x 804 at 240 or 200 fps. 240 or 200 fps". That is a lower pixel count than my RX10II in 1080p240. Granted it only shoots for 2 seconds!

Yep. Looks fabulous for a hybrid camera but that signature yellowish tone from Sony just can't be ignored. The Canon colors would not show the greens in this way imho. Although morning light often has this yellowish tint to some extent. RAW can probably fix it though.

I would like to hang around Johnnie Behiri and watch how he does it.

By proxy.

Ya, Prores Raw just looks like Phil's grading preference.
