Sony A7SIII = $3500, 10-bit 4K120p internal, 16-bit 4K60p RAW out

Eh, about $7,500 worth of room. Let's split the difference down the middle. $7,000 sounds just about right ... whenever it comes out. If at all.

PS. According to DPR, 60p is good for about an hour. I am not sure any of the early testers stretched it as far.

Well, I wasn't talking price so much as features. It sort of seems to me like the A7SIII has
the features of a FX9 except for the built in XLRs and variable ND. Some are even better
as the A7SIII has better high frame rates than the FX9. So what do they give the
FX6 to make it more attractive than the A7SIII but less attractive than the FX9?
I really don't see how they are going to do that. Oh well, they will
probably figure out a way, they usually do. Add in the variable ND
and XLR's and then cripple the codecs in some way or something
silly like that. Anyways, sorry, I don't mean to derail the thread.
This camera is amazingly good and so close to my perfect cam.
Even without the ND or XLR, I'm tempted to preorder it.

Looks great to me for what it is. Just now have to decide if it's a good replacement for my FS5/Odyssey combo. Obviously much smaller but stats are similar vs RAW recording on Odyssey. The autofocus and gimble use are the positives but have to keep my A7iii for a stills/Bcam instead of keeping the Fs5.

Derail away. We would all do well to consider all our options.

I want me a small camera for gimbal. I dont love the dslr form factor and would probably prefer z-cam style but no biggie. Also, having built in EVF and LCD is very convenient

Better low light? That was a complaint from the a7sii? Twas pretty good already :)

The 4k120p crop is like 1.1x. Not that I'll be using it much (although it DOES record sound, so maybe that will become the new corporate activation overkill framerate)

Yeah it seems like there are no artificial recording time limits. Overheating in 4k60 and 4k120 in hot situations after an hour or three
I just lumped the better low light in there. Over heating 4k60/120 after hour who films slomo for that long? I just watched a B&H video review. My only complaint shadows/blacks are crushed. Never have been a fan of Sony's look.

It depends on when FX-6 comes out. I'd guess it'd have to have 6K. And, as you said, if it's only 4K, Sony'd have to throw in the ND and XLR's (XLR's ought to be a given on a larger size body) to make it market worthy. Technically speaking, there's an in-between resolution of 4.5-5K that is virtually indisnguishable from 6K-into-4K downsampling. Alexa LF is 4.5. BMD UMP is 4.6.

Of course, Sony already has a 24 MPX FF sensor it sells to Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma and others. It just chose to stick with a lower res on SIII.

It does not have Super35 crop mode at 4k, which is expected since it's 1:1 pixel readout. By contrast a pixel-binned sensor can step down to 1:1, scan a cropped region and produce effective magnification. I got used to doing that on previous Sony and Panasonic cameras, which is like a built-in teleconverter.

You can't have everything.

That was what people said about the R5. Until they realized that just turning on the camera or shooting stills heats it up and you can't get consistent shooting times for even small amounts. I, for one, am relieved by the excess capacity of the A7SIII :)

No surprise, but already #3 on the best-sellers (B&H)...will be interesting to see if it's #1 in 24 hours.

True dat. My only complaint thus far after reading through all specs.

It's just for fun. You'll probably end up canceling your preorder anyway as you internally go back-and-forth for days. LOL

(Like we all do about various gear.)

There'd have to be another gimbal friendly camera from canon or sony in the rumor stream. The R5 disqualified itself for me because I need something more reliable. The a7iv might work but I don't need another stills camera and it probably won't have the same video chops. GH6 - I doubt they will pull out amazing AF. Fuji - not full-frame either and not as good AF. FX6 - bigger than I want for Ronin-S. That leaves the mystery canon RF video camera. That'll probably be bigger than I want as well and lack IBIS. I could consider waiting to see what that is. Hopefully rumors will arise in the next couple months. But besides that mystery possibility, I think that logic points me to the A7SIII. It may not be the camera I want but it might be the camera I need.

And it will play with the FS7 well.

"Right." I actually think it will take work to match, based on what folks have said about matching FS7 and FX9. But it's a matching brand, similar codecs, probably a closer match than canon. It may play well with fx9

Also, the enduring demand of the A7SII impresses me. People have been shooting with that camera long after better tools came around. That may mean good things for the A7SIII's future

I think the FX9 looks different and much better as far as what I am seeing so far (from the a7SIII).

I thought the R5 would also be a "cheap IQ" of the C300/C500, but really love what I'm seeing there (in 8K and HQ).

I thought this guy's A7SIII video looked great, better than the rest. Natural skin tones, beautiful nature tones. https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=emb_logo&v=h9OxG1eEeGg&time_continue=525

He also had some of the nicest skin tones from the R5 and at the time I chalked it up to the camera. Now i think hes just a good colorist and it gives me hope that i could get good results from the camera too. Meanwhile the detail and clarity if the slow motion trounces that of the R5 slow motion IMO

Re:FX9 they claim they have matched the color gamut

Super bad vignetting starting at about 5:33. Something going on there, polarizing ND, stacked filters. IBIS? What is it?

Probably a variable ND filter that's hitting its limit.

Or ND used with step rings (sticks out a bit) on a wider focal length.

I thought about pre-canceling a possible pre-order. Or not. I haven't made up my mind if I'm undecided or not. The decision was easy.
