Sony A 6300 Overheating is a real problem

Based on what I saw he just added a big thermal pad on the back of the board. I'm not one to to do a full camera teardown so this option isn't for me.

Yes, the bulk of it was adding that thermal pad. And yes, that's way too much work. But at the very end, there's something about changing out the software. That's what I was asking about.

Do you remember when A7RII came out, some units ran hot and some didn't and people were up in arms about it and then, suddenly, it was solved? And I then wrote, "They may have just added some extra thermal gel or something".

It looks like an OEM solution may involve just that. An added thermal pad/gel.

I want an A6300 in a bigger body...with 4K/60p. More cooling, more framerates.

Newer chips will solve the heating problem without adding to the camera size. A6300, its performance notwithstanding, is considered a consumer/enthusiast camera. A7S/R and A9/99 will be more along the pro lines with bigger bodies and so on.

Of course, A99II/A9 has been bandied about for two years now. I wonder how many iterations it has undergone in that time frame.

This sounds like a business opportunity for someone: to perform this thermal pad upgrade for a price. Of course, on a $1000 camera, the price couldn't be too high.

a6300 has a lot going for it and of course we will see it's features refined in a later release with all the bugs fixed. To bad this overheating thing killed it for me. Love the body size and image quality.

Wish I still had mine but the thought of going through the testing again gives me the chills! :-D Lets hope it improves the video overheating as well. The description only mentions still mode.

File Description
This utility updates the ILCE-6300 camera firmware to version 1.10 and provides the following benefits:
  • Improves overall stability and operability of the camera
  • Improves stability in picture shooting mode by optimizing temperature control (effects vary according to temperature)

For anyone testing the new update, would you be kind enough to include your testing conditions: temperature, 4K?, any special memory card, etc.

Hallo Jim

4k test it is normal and it's not hard to understand ..there is the problem
28 C temperature... 64GB SANDISK EXTREME PRO SD UHS-I CARD,Sony has not solved the problem with the video , only on the photo..
SONY ..... Improves stability in picture shooting mode by optimizing temperature control..

exactly what it says and Erik Naso

Just back from Asia using the a6300 as a B cam, it worked fine until I had it mounted outside a car in stationary traffic and the alarm came on after 26 min roughly...ambient temp 32C I think.

I am wary of firmware fixes, unless there was a bug in the original firmware Sony may lose some features or sacrifice video processing in order to drop the temp. You don't get something for nothing.
One possible fix, the Sony a6300 is designed to be weather proof, if you sacrifice that which would involve some small vent holes / slot - top around the C1 button and bottom allowing cooler air to flow through the camera.

This could be a retro fix a new top and battery door.

All in all I am still very pleased, the a6300 could be used in places my FS5 would have stood out and been banned, I got some great shots and its now a firm part of my kit.
