C100: Sony 4k hack

Firstly, the F5 comes shipped with the capability to shoot 4k RAW, just not record it onboard. This hack allows 4k to the proprietary XAVC codec to proprietary sxs-1 cards (500 bucks for 64gb - not a lot of record time). Secondly its a 16.5k camera body.

If you want a 4k capable canon camera theres the C500 or the 1dc.

Lol what does the price have to do with it? The GH4 is l$1700 and it shoots 4k to SD cards.

If ML was able to crack raw on the 5D, why not 4k out of the C100/300? There is a raw 4k stream somewhere in the C100/300, they just need to find a way to capture it before it gets compressed and scaled down to 1080p. (Easier said then done obviously)

Theres an FAQ or info somewhere on the ML site. Basically says they won't touch the C-line cameras because Canon told them not to (and to keep Canon from putting an end to their current ML offerings for Canon DSLRs, they have to go by what Canon wants)

Firmware files for C100/300/500 use different, more sophisticated encryption algorithm, while DSLRs (including 1D C) are simpler and easy to crack (which ML did), that's why Canon do not release 1D C firmware updates to the public, it has to be done at a service centre via intranet connection.

I use Canon DSLR's and love what the Magic Lantern team has done. I've been following the ML forum and have been using their alpha builds for awhile. While I respect that the ML team has stated they won't do anything with the C line and 1DX due to Canon's warning, my suspicion has always been that it has far more to do with being overwhelmed with all of the work on the consumer DSLR's. It's not easy work for no pay and most of them don't have access to any of the C cameras.

+1

BTW as far as I can tell, the F5 hack while of course hard to figure out, looks kind of manageable on the "coding" side. More like finding a loophole than reverse coding. But hey, maybe that how C100 owners could at least get a higher bitrate for their AVCHD - RAW is sooo hipster anyway;)

Canon never commented in any form on third-party hacks. At no point did Canon state being specifically against hacking the 1DX, 1DC, or C cameras, if they did, that would mean their approval of hacking the lower-end DSLRs, and that's not true. That was just a report on a rumor site about someone hearing from someone that he's heard a Canon rep saying something about bringing their lawyers in should ML hack the 1D.

If you can send a few 1DCs, C100/300/500 and pay for their time and effort to hack them, you can get some pretty cool stuff, like turning a 1Dx into a 1Dc, or maybe unlocking 4K raw output on the C300, tons of possibilities but nothing is guranteed therefore quite a hard investment to make. It will never happen. Move on.

Point missed, however may not articulated it very well. Moving on...

It was Chuck (forgot his last name) who is a Canon USA exec who made the threat on video a couple years back. That doesn't make it official Canon policy of course, but it gives an insight into what some of the people at Canon are thinking. Other Canon execs from Japan have made very different statements about ML in general with a more tolerant tone, but they avoided answering the question about ML for C cameras or 1DX.

I am willing to bet the 1DX is able to do everything the 1DC is. It is just a numbers game for Canon. Which is why it would be amazing for Nikon to just say F it and release something bad ass with no upper level cinema line to protect. Although this is an old thought, and with all the options available compared to what we had just 5 years ago even, it amazes me that we are all still so gung ho on new equipment and always making it better for less in order for us to go out and shoot close up of leaves, and rocks and waves crashing into shore.

I'm sure many would have said the same about the F5/55, and yet it was "hacked" seemingly with very little effort.
I just think no one has really tried. (not that I blame them, who would want a $5k or $14k paper weight if something goes wrong)

Assuming the main difference between a 1DX and a 1DC is the heat sink and assuming it matters, that heat sink is important. The 1DC gets hot shooting 4K. It can get really hot.

I'd be happy if somebody would give the C100 a better codec option and 60p. Sony just did it for the prosumer RX10 which is what I'm using as my b-cam. It now has XAVC-S and 120 fps. An absolutely wonderful upgrade for a camera that offers a lot of punch. I'm sure Canon could do the same via firmware.

I don't think this is ever going to happen!
