I can think of a few people that said something that made me want to do that to them......but wow......I smell lawsuit!

MY GUESSES
White haired lady
"She is ..."
Lady that punches
"[you are/she is?] trash"
Lady that gets punched
"... honey?"
"she had enough THC in her system.."

My guess - somebody found pot (THC right) in somebodies locker and that lady that punches and her daughter are denying the daughter's involvment.

Notice how after the mom Punches the lady, the daughter doesn't flinch or skip a beat and they both go into exit mode ... most kids would freak or at least be stunned if there mom puched somebody.

Yeah Moms wrist didn't bend at all like she's been thru this before. Standing up for her daughters right to somke dope. I'm hoping she gets sued for all the dope money she spends on her daughter.

yeah Jay emailed me (thanks Jay) but I haven't seen it on here.
I would be interested to know anyone can better decipher what they are saying
Anybody got like super FBI audio clarification software out there?
"Enhance ... enhance .... enhance ..."

I hate to be the "old fogey" again, but IMHO this is not funny at all.

What is funny about other people's pain? Why is it cool to watch humans hurt each other like this? Am I missing something?

It's kinda like the 3 stooges but 2 stooges, anyway she seems to be ok, so no big deal.

Agreed. It seems like in the last 5-10 years we've moved light years away from even the most basic respect for others. With Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, and obnoxious reality shows it seems many people love to watch others humiliated and degraded. I hope these are the 50% of americans who don't bother to vote.

Sorry but I'm the type of guy that finds it funny when someone falls or gets hammered like that.

If she got hurt then that's a different story. REAL pain or REAL trauma I take serious but one old lady clocking another is just funny as hell to me.

I'm not positive, but that footage looks familiar -- I think it was from a trial that aired on CourtTV, but I can't remember the case details. (Or maybe I just saw it when it was posted previously on the board??? I'm so bombarded with images lately my memory is going to Hades in a handbasket... More caffeine, please! And would someone please turn off Nancy Grace? I'm addicted.)

I find it disturbing more than funny.
But like a car wreck i can't turn away.

I wouldn't despair about the state of man though ... Springer and Stern and others are quite a step forward from throwing humans into an arena to watch them kill each other or be mauled to death by lions.

I'm not advocating complacency nor am I saying that Jerry Springer or Howard Stern don't have any ill effects on society. (they do serve a function though IMHO, whether its worth the cost is another can of worms)

I'm just saying that as far back as we have written documentation there has been both reality "entertainment" exploiting others dignity or even their very lives and that other people's pain has always been funny - again going back to the earliest documentation.

One need only to look to the improvised scenarios or Lazzi of the early Greeks and later the Romans which envolved bits such as a fool masquerading as a dentist and causing all sorts of pain and randomly pulling teeth, the fool mnasquerading as a doctor and causing pain on the other end while administering an enima, the fool masquerading as a waiter and serving the guests with plates prodcued from his trousers and as a finale, pooping a plate of cherries which he serves to everyone for desert.

Comedy at the expense of others is also prevalent in Punch and Judy puppet shows and Looney Tunes cartoons and so on and so on ...

When you break comedy down there are several reasons or classes of funny ...
one is the unexpected (a talking dog, a doorknob that comes off in your hand)
one is the intersection of two incongruous elements ("you can lead a whore to culture but you can't make here think" the cliche saying crosses with a new concept ... basically puns but could also be a nun in a metal band, etc.)
one is others pain as detailed above
and of course many more

but my point is that those basic ideas of funny are as old as time

now ... what's different iin this case is of course that these are real people and that's a whole nother kettle of fish. IMHO if they are going to act like that in public then ... it's up for grabs and I think the woman who punches the other lady is more the butt of the joke than the punchee.

but laughing at other people bonking each other on the nose has always been basic human nature, good or bad.

I guess I just feel like reality tv has helped numb us to the pain of others. Where we view real pain as entertainment.

I'm not talking about violence in films. I love a gory flick, whether it is zombies, Tarantino, or "The Godfather". And I'm not talking about Amercia's Funniest Video where a kid accidentally hits his Dad with the wiffle ball bat.

I'm talking about real people who are hurting inside and choose violence to hurt others. When did that become entertainment?

I'm not a saint. I have slowed down to look at a traffic accident. I've watched these kind of videos here before and said nothing. Hell, I probably even laughed once or twice. But why?

Is it the internet? Is it because the people are anonymous? Where do we draw the line? How much pain can we watch people inflict on each other, before it stops being "Something to cheer us up"?

Sorry for the rant, it just depresses me.

Chris

p.s. Jack, I just saw your post. I think the difference I see, is that between reality and entertainment. When it is happening for real, I don't think it exists for the entertainment of others, like the 3 stooges.

I think you make really good points and have a legitimate concern about society and reality TV.

IMHO reality TV is just a fad and will die off or decline in popularity so that its just another thing,

Plus you do have people like Oprah and others trying to do something positive in that meliue (sp?).

But you definatelt put your finger on it -- reality TV has made a difference in how we view clips like this ... or at least people being comfortable that they admit that they think its funny ... or at the very least it has blurred the line.

I don't really think it would make people any less likely to be uncomfortable around that sort of thing in real life or less empathetic to people in their actual environments being bonked on the nose, the same way you or I would freak if we saw someone beaten with a bat in real life but think its cool if Pesci or Denero or Pacino does it.

A lot of it has to do with how the individual codifies what they are seeing on the screen as lumped in with narrative fictional, or distant alien things or as something they are interconnected with as fellow humanbeings.

But as for these three women ... please don't lose sleep over these "ladies" ... they're goofballs.

Jack,

First, I think this discussion is very interesting and I agree with most of what you are saying.

This is the second time this video was posted in the cafe. And both times people are reacting like it is a party; "awesome", "cool", "hilarious", etc.

I think we are bombarded with this kind of entertainment. I agree this isn't some major tragedy, this isn't the genocide in Africa. But, without being dramatic, I do think it is a slippery slope.

Once you numb yourself to the pain of one individual, that grey line where you allow yourself to feel, care, and be outraged gets a little fuzzier.

What do you think?

Chris

Jack, the WHOLE difference is that it's real. It's the same reason I can watch your short with the guy peeling the meat off his arm, but if that was REAL, I would NOT find it entertaining or be able to joyfully squirm at it at all, the way I could with your movie.

I cannot watch ANY beheading video, or anything like that. But I can watch any horror film depicting the same thing.

That's what it is for me.

Same thing with the cartoons, puppet shows, etc, you mention...but actually, I don't even think cartoon humor works that well on real people. Like I never really found the Three Stooges all that funny for whacking each other on the head and such...
