Something to Cheer you Up

Chris, what makes you think that someone finding this specific clip funny has become numb to anything relative to pain or has lost their ability to feel sympathy for another human being? That's an extreme judgement on those who did find it silly or funny, it's not that serious if you ask me.

I recently saw a clip of a skater doing this HUGE jump down a flight of stairs and into a parking lot, he fell and he slid right under the wheels of a driving SUV and was ran over. Now that wasn't close to being funny, I felt sick to my stomach in fear of what the result of that incident was. Now that's pain, that's real.

People choose to react to things in their own way and this woman obviously chose the wrong approach to deal with her emotion. At the time that it happened, if I were standing right there, it wouldn't of been the least bit funny but as I go through the hardship of my work day and see this clip it just helped lighten things up for me.. does that make me a sick man or someone that needs to re-evaluate his emotional or mental state?

JAY -- you're a sick MF ... but you're my kind of sick MF :)

- yeah I know that's what the discussion is about. My only point is that the impulse is there and some sperate reality and recorded reality differently (good or bad)

Agree the thread title is misleading and the clip is not uplifting at all.

Agree 100%.

Maybe I'm just lazier than you but I think its within the ebb and flow off sociatal values.

You know ... how things go puritan for a while then hedonistic then puritan.

I think we are just one the upswing of exploitation due to this new genre and new media, not that reality TV falls into either category, that's just the example I can think of.

I also think that while the "bad side" comes and goes every age that the "good side" gets a stronger foothold with each age, limiting how far the pendulum can swing back to the bad.

So -- no way real televised fights to the death would go over nowadays, but they would have once upon a time.

Maybe I'm just wearing rose colored glasses but it seems like the other effect of global awareness and media is that things slowly improve.

Whether you agree with Stephen Colbert or not (and we aren't allowed to say whether we do or not - no politics) a "fool" in the traditional court jester sense stood up to the greatest power in the land and you can see it on You Tube along side snakes vomiting whole hippos and monkeys pulling dog tales if you missed Colbert on C SPan or CNN whichever it was on.

So ... I think (hope) all this media everywhere and "global village" and under the microscope reality TV will have long term good effects that would outway any trend toward insensitivness on domestic or everyday life levels which i think is minimal
(though a legitimate concern as prolonged minimal effect can add up)

I'll shut up for a while so I'm not hogging the thread / overposting ... just enjoying the discussion.

First impression...."Dammmnnnn!"
Secong impression..."What possible good did that do for me?"

Have I really gotten so numb that this would be funny to me?
When I worked as a news photographer for a local ABC affiliate, the question that was ALWAYs on my mind was if I rolled up on an serious traffic accident before emergency vehicles did was "Do I shoot? Or do I help render aid until ambulances ride. And if the answer was shoot video, what kind of person does that make me? Fortunately I never found out the answer to those questions as ambulances were always on hand before I rolled up and I was able to capture video for the 10:00 news. Did I like what I did in those horrific crashes and fires. NO. But I still had obligations.

Another persons pain is not news nor is it entertainment.

Coffee,

I don't think you have something wrong with you and I am not questioning your moral standing.

The video consists of this: One woman punching another woman in the face in front of a child.

I am just asking the question when did this become entertainment? I think it is a fairly recent phenomena. I think several years ago people still would have looked, but they would have called it shocking. Now we view it as a way to "lighten the day".

I think that is interesting and yes, a little sad.

Chris

Maybe I'm a bad person, but was I the only one who watched it about 12 times and then called my girlfriend upstairs to watch it another 3 or 4?

I guess the name of the Thread was a little misleading to most, but there are some people who found it to be funny. Bottom line, the lady is ok, if blood was pouring out her nose then ofcourse that would never cheer anybody up, but the confusement look on her face was what caught me.

So maybe I should of changed the thread tittle to something like " Lady get's Punched" didnt want to offend anybody, I guess those who enjoyed the clip are Sick Psycho's and those who's upset over the clip are Normal some way or another, who knows... but nothing to get bent out of shape over.

Chris, it's obvious that we're a different breed my friend.

Horse, I'm with you on this.

The clip makes me laugh, BUAHAHAHA! <------- Like that

I didn't find it funny per se' but I thought it was shocking.

It was a coward move on the white haired woman's part by taking a cheap shot when the woman was clearly looking away.

If violence is going to be how one chooses to solve a dispute then at least abide by the rules of engagement.

I agree that this definitely isn't anything to lose sleep over and isn't any big deal. I also don't think those who found humor are sick, evil, or whatever. Yes, we've come a long way from watching the dregs of society being eaten alive by lions in the Roman Collesium, but I still think we're on a "backslide" in culture where watching others' misery passes for entertainment. Personally, I think that's because there is so much insecurity in our culture these days (after 9/11 in particular) that popular culture has become a sounding board for the darker sides of our psyches. (don't you just love pop-psychology)

The whole point of comedy (or one aspect of comedy) is that painful/tragic things happen that don't REALLY involve intense suffering. That's why it's funny if a thirty year old man falls on a patch of ice and gets up with only his pride hurt, but an 80-yr. old woman falling and breaking her hip isn't funny at all. Or why something that happens in a film is funny that might be terrifying in reality. It's the consequence and intensity of "pain" that makes it "humor" or "tragedy".

Humor is also a way of dealing with our fears and insecurities in the "safe" environment of literature, film, etc. as opposed to the sometimes terrifying world of "reality". I think reality television has blurred these lines, though. I think it's human nature to be fascinated or interested in pain or tragedy. But to laugh at pain and tragedy is not at all natural IMO, but is born of culture.

BTW, these comments are directed to the more degrading elements of reality TV - the old lady getting punched is much less relevant to my point.

OK, this self-apointed expert on humor and culture will shut the hell up before someone punches me in the face!:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Jack, the WHOLE difference is that it's real. It's the same reason I can watch your short with the guy peeling the meat off his arm, but if that was REAL, I would NOT find it entertaining or be able to joyfully squirm at it at all, the way I could with your movie.

I'll have to disagree. I think real is funny. Have you ever heard the old saying "truth is stranger than fiction"? The same goes for comedy. Some of the funniest stuff happens in real life. You just couldn't write or have it performed in such a way.

I laugh if I see someone fall over on a bike. I laugh if I see someone get shocked. I laughed so hard when a good friend of mine got stung by a bunch of yellow jackets. I'm laughing right now thinking back on it.

As for this old woman video I have to agree. It was not funny in my opinion. It's more depressing. It was premeditated. That woman was planning on hitting that other lady from the start. It doesn't even fall under the sick comedy I listed above.

I also agree about reality TV. It's lame. Most of that junk is contrived and just as scripted as CSI Miami. Only it has poor, poor production values and higher $$$ turnover. I don't buy into the reality TV thing.

This clip has become quite popular online, but...

I believe it is more than that; it is a mother punching her daughter's teacher in front of her at a PTA meeting. Come on...that's funny as hell.

Chris, what about this? I've posted this one before...but can you honestly tell me this doesn't tickle your funny bone in a big way? http://gorillamask.net/grapestomp.shtml (Cause it's up there with the funniest shïte I've ever seen)

Frankly, I think yuz all are reading way to much into it.
Lighten up already.

that's awful ...
and I knew what was going to happen 10 seconds in and I couldn't stop watching.
the reaction of the host/anchors is kind of funny, but whew ... the sounds that woman made ... ech.

Callaghan,

Wow, someone in a lot of pain who is having trouble breathing. Yeah, that's hysterical.

Look, this whole conversion is starting to get repetitive. Clearly there are those who find this sort of thing funny. I'm just not one of them and telling us to "lighten up" is probably as effective as me telling you to "not find it funny".

In the end, I truly do not mean any offense and we will just have to "agree to disagree".

Chris

There is nothing funny about this. I am with Chris 100%.

We have become a society that cheers when others are hurt or degragraded in front of others. I detest Violence. It sickens me. It is people like this that make the planet unbearable.

I'm starting to wonder if Chris is the only sane person here.

Go over to ifilm or ebaums if you want to wank off to this dribble. Dont post that non-sense here please.
