Some sample clips from owners of the new Canon XA20 and XA25

Thanks for posting Lance. I was hoping for some things with this camera, but I don't know if it will be for me. On auto the image looks like a very good consumer camera. I had hoped Canon would have added image controls in the menu to take that image and elevate it to a more professional level, but they did not not. I was quite disappointed to find almost no image controls upon looking through the manual. I realise what I am looking for is an XF150 and hopefully one will be made with a nice lens and light sensitivity in a small package. I really like my XF300 but am looking for a smaller camera to go with it as well as being strong enough to act alone. Still early with the XA series but they have not sold me yet.

I would be surprised if both the XF100 and XF300 did not get refreshed by the end of this year, and new models announced, with availability early next year.

They were both announced 4 months before the XA10.

Hi Bassman2003, what sort of image controls were you thinking of ? Is it something that could be tackled by colour grading in post-production ?

Lance, I hope the will refesh the XF line.

Saied, basically the image controls that are in the XF line - color matrix, gamma choices etc... I would rather match the cameras at the source than rely upon post color correction.

The second one, "Footage uploaded by a new XA25 owner here in the USA" looked pretty bad. Look at the whitewater segment. In the wide shot the foam in the water was completely blown out, even while the detail in the rocks was underexposed and blocky. Only when he zoomed in on the rock did it autoexpose to where the rock was decently exposed. Likewise when he was totally zoomed into the water then the water was properly exposed. But the camera is incapable of exposing for both at the same time.

This speaks to the camera's very limited dynamic range, due, I suppose, to its tiny sensor.

You can also see this in the scene at the end with the black cat - to avoid blowing out the carpet in the background he had to underexpose the fur. The result was that the main body of the cat had no detail at all in the fur - just a muddy black nothing, again due to the camera's poor DR.

Am i missing something in post 6 ? what lens.My HF -G30 same sensor as the XA25 is better in low light the my EOS M SLR sized sensor with a Canon EF-M 22mm f2 lens.
