All of this was shot setup like this:

  • Canon-Log
  • Canon 70-200mm
  • ISO 850 the whole time (great to work with NDs)
  • Shutter @ 1/60s
  • Stills from the video with camera on tripod.
  • Internal recording 24Mpbs AVCHD
  • First shot of each series is non-graded.
  • Others are graded inside After Effects (using levels/saturation/tritone typically)
  • Graded with original 24Mbps AVCHD *.mts files.

COMMENTS:
• I have noticed that the AVCHD creates lots of blocking after pronounced grading, that becomes often noticeable during playback on Apple Cinema 30 screen, as well as panasonic 1080p TV screen. I'm looking forward to the Ninja-2 coming next week, and try the uncompressed codec.
• The peaking feature worked great with the Canon 70-200mm, I almost never missed my shots. The footage was sharp. Refreshing after 3 years of 5D. UPDATE: This is using only the LCD of the camera. With the 70-200mm it was easy to focus.
• Ergonomy is just fantastic, buttons are quite easy to use for rapid changes. Handle with Iris wheel, magnification button just great (joystick... could be better, but good.)
• Viewfinder. I've barely used it, don't think I will use it much... no use for focus, exposure, etc..
• Battery!!! YES!!!! The original battery that comes with the C100 lasts 300min. Insane. I also bought the Canon BP-975 and that lasts 400min. So you are covered.

Yeah the footage out of this cam is turning me.

Obonin you say the viewfinder isn't good for focus, how crap is it?

I've been using the DP4 evf on my 550d and it's pretty crap when you hit record, any idea if the C100 evf is as bad?

Thanks,

Phil

It's okay for focus if you really have to use it, it does have peaking. The image in the viewfinder is just really small, and the ergonomics are weak. It feels like you are pushing your eye up against a consumer camera evf, there's no eye cup really. You could use your DP4 with the C100 and it would look great though.

The viewfinder is disappointing. So much light leak since it doesn't have an eye cup renders it useless. Your forehead is up against the handle as well so you cant smash your eye into it. This frustrated me this week. Other than that I like the C100 a lot.

I couldn't really pull focus with the viewfinder. I've got good eyes. I think it'd really mainly be for a quick check of your settings.. maybe. I'm not sure.

So today, actually we were doing a side 2 side comparison with the 5D. The 5D had the DP4 on it, and the C100 had the DP6. When you press REC on the 5D, it takes about 3 seconds to start... On the C100 it's instantaneous. I haven't used the DP4 on the C100, but i've used the DP6 on the 5D, same delay b/w pressing REC and actually recording, and the DP6 showing the picture. So i'd assume the DP4 will work just as well with the C100. I'll report if I give it a try in the next few days. And of course the 5D only gives 480P out on HDMI while recording. But the C100 gives 1080P. The picture on the DP6 from the C100 looks really great. But I think I may not use it as much since I'm getting a Ninja-2.

Nice examples, thanks.
Is that delta frame avchd compression artefacts up there in the sky above the cable lines in images 2 to 5?

Thanks mate.

I am sick of attaching crap to my camera, maybe with a better eyecup it may pass?...Who's making one?

Cheers.

Hi obonin,

So funny I live just a few blocks from where you filmed those shots ( 20th and 3d). I run there all the time, small world.

Yes I found the EVF almost useless, the picture is so small... The first time I put my eye in there I thought it was a joke. I was bummed. But I love the camera for its form factor. I do get annoyed by the cable that runs from the handle to the side camera...

I seem to remember reading on teh spec sheet when teh c100 was announced that it had a cache record feature that would let it record th 3 seconds before you pressed the start button. No one has mentioned this feature since its release. Is this feature missing or is it over looked? For me as a wedding videographer, the cache record was one of th main reasons i was excited to upgrade to the c100!

It's there and it works great. You can see the timecode running all the time if you have REC RUN in the case of PREREC. It works in 24P, as that's how I've used it.

Thanks for the confirmation guys - i have been wondering why people have not compared this feature in the c100/300/fs100/fs700/blackmagic debates. Seems like a huge boon to me if you do any kind of documentary style work!

I would love to hear your thoughts on the ninja-2 as an external monitor compared to a dedicated product like teh SmallHD's. Almost seems too good to be true having everything in such a small package!

I just got the Ninja 2, and I have to say I'm disappointed with the color quality on the monitor. It seems a bit dull, and much darker than the C100 LCD. I'm not sure which is more accurate though. I'm going to guess the LCD however.
