Some Pix from Apple Event

Here's the quick skinny on pricing as I understand it. It's $5,995 for the camera without a P2. P2 cards are $2,000 for 8 GB. This is where the under $10K concept comes into play. Just under $10K with a full load of P2 cards. But that's not something to be too scared of.

You can record to DV tape right out of the box or go full HD onto hard drive via Firewire. You'll only need to buy P2 right away if you're dying to jump into the waters. Otherwise you'll have plenty of options to work with at $5,995. That's what I meant when I said the camera has a foot planted in 2005 and one in the far future. You can jump right into the water immediately for a premium or slowly wade in with wallet mostly intact while waiting for P2 card prices to drop. Sweet.

I'm going to head back over to the show now. Try to give more info if possible and I'm sure some more folks will jump in. :)

Are there no numbers on the zoom lens? From the photo it appears to be none.

Oh, we can wait on the pix... Get us more info!!! Hurry down there and let us know more detailed specs and what the camera has to offer... (Resolution-wise, features-wise, which formats will record to tape, which will only be allowed to record on P2)

So, that leaves Firestore as an option for HD in the field? Hmmm, sounds good.

Does anyone else think the new camera looks a little *Squatty*?? Let the "reservoir-bashing" begin.

I do like it of course....it just looks a little chubby!! :)

It probably looks squished because of the wide-angle 16:9 lens hood on the front... Plus, it looks like it's fully-enclosed with a back now <- Did that bug anyone other than me on the DVX100?

Looking at the size, i doub't it's big enough for full size DV tapes.
Woudlnt' make sence for cost, size, power requirements, blah blah...

Is that a nice fat iris wheel I see? I agree the cam looks squatty. Probably comes from packing in all those features :)

Wow. Panasonic wasn't kidding when they said the price would be competitive with the Z1. 5,995 is very affordable for a mini varicam. This is awesome.

Time to start counting the pennies. :)

Nice to hear that it will have direct to HDD capabilities. Any idea when and who (I assume Firestore) will have the HDD available?

What do you mean?
The DVX100 lens hood is basically 4 square "sides" with gaping holes behind it on the back. I know this probably doesn't affect light hitting the lens too much, but it is very unorthadox for a lens hood design and looked awkward in my opinion.

Noah,

Is it alright for me to repost those pics elsewhere?
Don't want to do it without your permission.

Thanks.

DAMN this is an exciting day.

Why is support for HDD so surprising. Any camera can do that, even a small handycam. Just plug firewire into a Firestore. If they've added the logic for direct to ANY firewire drive, that's something interesting. But still sucky. This announcement of the cam without a P2 cards is bollocks. I was sure they'd include one - cause it just seems silly. No out of the box HD experience is really dumb. I think that will definitely cost them sales. The HD100 and Z1 will seem so much simpler and ready to go.

Aza, according to Noah, it comes with 2 P2 8Gb cards for 9995. As they promissed, it will be under 10K with or without P2.

I still wonder why some people always expect miracles.

Aza... you can bet there will be a bundle that includes P2 cards, at still the "under $10,000" price.

So you're saying it's "dumb" that they're letting people buy the camera by itself, for $4,000 less? You can have it either way -- a fully-loaded, out-of-the-box solution for $10,000 that records 40 minutes of 720/24p, or you can buy the "stripped-down" edition for under $6,000.

I can't imagine how that's "dumb", I think everyone wins that way.

Aza, the logic is:

You'll only need to buy P2 right away if you're dying to jump into the waters. Otherwise you'll have plenty of options to work with at $5,995. Makes perfect sense to me.
