the HVX200 looks like it's going to be a fantastic camera. I may have to put my VariCam's up for sale!! :)

LOL I hope you're joking. It's like saying you will sell your viper to buy a neon.

Sorry to poop this excited party again. I am very disappointed. According to camcorderinfo "The new camcorder records DVCPRO50, DVCPROHD and DV video to solid state P2 flash media cards at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The camcorder can also record a standard DV signal to MiniDV tapes. "

Well WTF! A standard DV signal to tape? That's what we have right now.

It says: "If you want HD, well, then buy some nice Cards from us. Lets say 1K for 5 Minutes, OK? Sorry old chap. If you need an hour of DVCPROHD, you'd better go and earn some more money."

Even if I hab the money. How do they expect me to change cards every few minutes.

And the design? Well, guys, sorry.

Never mind.

And BTW: Helo! Pani! Update the Homepage! Thanks, my browser is crashing as I try to download the broshure or some other piece of Information.

Perhaps they are all celebrating the great 999,-$-per-five-minute-HD-recording-deal. Well for everybody filming events: Make it short, you have 12 Minutes to go before you change cards.

You can record to DV tape right out of the box or go full HD onto hard drive via Firewire. You'll only need to buy P2 right away if you're dying to jump into the waters. Otherwise you'll have plenty of options to work with at $5,995. That's what I meant when I said the camera has a foot planted in 2005 and one in the far future. You can jump right into the water immediately for a premium or slowly wade in with wallet mostly intact while waiting for P2 card prices to drop. Sweet.

Phillip,

I'm feeling some of the same things. I think the hype got too out of control and made us believe the HVX200 was going to be second coming of Christ. Sadly, I think we might all be a little let down in our own way.

I'm happy with the price. 5995. Nice. So realistically it will probably be lower than that when it is available. Now if we can get some affordable P2 and Hard Drive solutions we will all be set.

Lastly, I think it would be cool if ALL or MOST of the existing accessories like matteboxes, follow focus, etc. would work with the new cam. I know people that would hate to have to re-buy 1500 dollar accessories.

Who is Phillipe kidding? He'll be second in line to buy one of these. Behind moi, of course.

P2 cards will be a tad cheaper by the time the 4th quarter hits.

speak for yourselves. You'd have to be an idiot to think that 6K was going to get the job done.

More like the 10K or 12K level just to get up and running properly, not to mention the laptop and NLE that can edit in the field on a laptop.

Noah, I totally agree, that this Cam will be a legend as the DVX is right now IN TWO YEARS.

Right now, I wish they would just have added HDV or something like that, to record more than 12 Minutes HD For I don't see cards capable of more than 2 GB.

Or am I miscalculating. Thiat might be so because it's quite late here.

You want HDV, there's a little JVC announcement coming tomorrow, and you won't have to wait till the 4th quarter either.

I'm sure you'll be able to hook up some sort of external drive eventually, remember it's not HDV so you just can fit that information onto a dv tape.... HDV is way more compressed..... And as for the P2 card situation I think they alway's said it would come in under 10k with and they did that, in fact you'd get 2 cards.... like barry said if you can't afford the card's right now you can get the camera, especially if you were someone thinking about getting a dvx, all the benifit's and when it comes time that you want to shoot hd it's there... ( a personal note on the cards... I bought a 256mb card for my digital about 14months ago and now i can get a 1gb for less than I paid for the 256.... with supply and demand and the fast changing technology those P2 cards will drop and grow.....

one last things

when P2 really becomes affordable HVX200 WILL be outdated (maybe by Sony/Canon). Essentially you are 'prepaying' a system which can be fully used only after an year.

its like buying a rocket fueled car, expecting rocket fuel to become cheaper. But when it becomes cheaper, there will be a perfect car built for it or hydrogen cell becomes THE next efficient fuel.

this just sounds silly, there are lot's of people using the original dvx and pumping out great material, they didn't just toss away' there camera's and call it junk cause something new is out..... there' will be new camera's alway's coming out, but the image this camera should be able to produce should allow it to hold it's own against the future compitition...

I have HDV

I have HDV

Besides: No time to go to JVC. I am standing right behind You ;-)

Somebody awake please help me: 100.000.000 Bits per second is how many Minutes on 2 GB??? I must be wrong!

It's called a HARD DISK!!!!! The camera supports recording HD to HARD DISK as well as P2. You want an hour of HD? All you need is a 60GB HDD and you're set with 60 minutes of 1080/24p.

HDV my ass. THIS is the real deal HD. 1080/24p. Accept no imitations.

Oh reallllllllllllllllllllly!!!?? Well in that case, maybe I'll become a traitor and jump ship to JVC.

Seriously though, I think JVC and Panny need to introduce their cams into the market at roughly the same time or there might be *some* jumping ship that occurs if JVC beats Panny to the market.

I'm thrilled that the price is so affordable at an MSRP of $6,000. I'm sure many potential buyers would like to start of with tape and a HDD and migrate into P2 as the cost of memory drops. Panasonic has delivered on all their promises--in spades. If people are reduced to complaining about the camera's shape and bundling--they must have done something right. :)

If the camera sheds some of that *fat and cellulite* before it enters the market, it might help to sell it *MORE*!! Right now it does look a "little" on the bubbley / toyish side. But I really don't give a rats ass. I KNOW IT IS A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA!! I WILL BUY ONE EITHER WAY!!

But as for the pictures.....She's got a little *Junk in tha' Trunk*!!

Honey ;) : I am a one man show when I am operating my cameras. There's mybe somebody for Sound. Maybe somebody for light. But I will definitely not hire some guy carrying a Harddrive and Batteries around on a life event.

Oh, and (don't take my sarkasm too serious): Does limitations mean: One Concert half a TB? Cool! Where do I get one of these hardcore-shake-me-as-much-as-you-want-drives?

You can probably get a Firestore HD device for around $1k in 4Q05 or whenever it comes out (considering how fast HDD prices drop, maybe less). So $7k for the whole package is not bad.

I don't think P2 prices will never be lower than HDD prices. So people who buy P2 cards are probably in situations where they can't use HDD.
