Some New FS700 Footage

I can see that "slo-mo" is going to be the new "shallow depth of field."

However, I'm not very impressed with the footage. Look at the highlight fringing at 1:03. Yuk. Likewise for the skin highlights at 00:32. I'd like to see what the PP settings were, because overall this looks pretty weak to me. Also, I know it's hard to discern from Vimeo footage but this does not look any sharper or more detailed than FS100 footage to me. So if this is as good as it gets, I don't know if the several thousand it will cost to upgrade is at all worth it.

If this really is an indication of overall sensor/gamma curve quality, and given the fact that I have little interest in 4K at this point, is really worth spending thousands of dollars to get a decent hand grip and built-in ND filters, and loose a stop in sensitivity at the same time? Hmmmm.

My questions come from a newbie to this level of camera, so take it with a grain of salt. As mentioned above, skin tones look weird to me when the guy comes off the swing, like his hands are funky looking. Is that caused by the camera, the operator, compression, what? Also, I see the fringing big time at 1:03, so is that a lens thing, sensor, etc? I would think this latest greatest camera would handle that better, so wondering what the root issue might be and if it's a matter of more practice with a new tool. I'm thinking about an upgrade from my old 170 and really needing to learn more...

The fringing is caused by the sensor/processor clipping the highlight colors at different levels. It's a known problem with the FS100, but I've never seen footage this bad in the better part of a year that I've been shooting with the FS100. This really is cause for concern. I mean that shot in this test is jut horrible.

The hand highlight could possibly be corrected with a better PP (color gamma and knee settings), which is why I asked for the profile specs. Or it could be corrected by underexposing a bit, which is what I have learned to do almost all the time with the FS100 (of course this can lead to other problems). But this is a known issue wit the FS100. My point is that from this footage it looks like Sony did very little to correct the most significant sensor issues in the FS100 - highlight clipping and rolloff. Perhaps reds are tamed a bit, which seems to be the case from a couple of other clips I've seen from the FS700, but judging from this footage highlights are still a big problem, maybe even worse. This is a huge disappointment for me, but I will reserve final judgement until I see a production camera.

+18 DB shot. It's not as nice of a low light performer it seems. Colored noise
instead of monochromatic. I suppose it's a trade off however it's not the
most pleasing news.

Probably the dullest fs700 test shots Ive seen. If people are going to overuse slow-mo, at least make it interesting.

I agree, and with both vids, perhaps keeping the subjects in focus would be a good idea!
Love the comment, I can see that "slo-mo" is going to be the new "shallow depth of field".
Here we have slo-mo with shallow depth of field (re: soft).

Thanks for sharing,
Al

This is so poor in all sense, I can't understand people wanted to share this and also Sony allowing this kind for a product they are trying to launch... the Fs700 is probably an excellent camera but whoing day after day such bad examples, is slowly but surely putting my attention further away from it day after day ...

Sorry to say

What's with all the bitching?

Seriously,
1. It's an $8,000 camera, I don't think the influx of slow motion footage from the FS700 is going to be anywhere near what the influx of shallow DOF footage was from when DSLRs got a video function.
2. It's a pre-production model. I'll start worrying about issues with the image when the camera is actually released.

I don't mean to sound like I'm bitching but poorly framed shots of uninteresting subjects isn't going to be magically saved by a fs700 or slo-mo.

These videos prove that there's little use for slo-mo and when you use it, it has to be motivated otherwise it is just tedious.

Buy a FS100 and rent a FS700 for the times you need slo-mo which probably won't be much. Seems a lot of extra cash for ND filters and 4K that no one really needs.

When I get a review model of the FS-700 (and I don't think Sony send me a pre-production review camera, so it will be a while), I'll be sure to do a clip of my cats in slo-mo. But at age 14, they already move in slo-mo.

You could say that about any crappy video.

"This video proves that there's little use for shallow DOF and when you use it, it has to be motivated"

"This video proves that there's little use for deep DOF and when you use it, it has to be motivated"

"This video proves that there's little use for 24p and when you use it, it has to be motivated"

"This video proves that there's little use for flowers in test videos and when you use them, they have to mean something"

Actually that FS700 clip did tell me something. It told me that performance at lowlight is significantly worse than in the FS100. Those shadows look very blotchy, kinda like in the NEX-5n. Hope this is just pre-production stuff.

Yep, it really looks like the NEX-5n! Oh my...I already miss the fine grain of my FS100. In that video it looks more like mud than grain. Maybe not the best decision to already sell my FS100...
I better save a little more for an F3.

Nah... wouldn't it be cool if someone used slow mo to show what it looks like when you shoot a balloon full of air or water? wait..........

Here's what I'm looking forward to seeing:

Slow mo shots at 1.2 while the camera is sliding.... of a cat with a light sabre.

The question I have is, how do you get Sony or Canon or Panny to send you a pre-production model to try out? Heck I'll take one from JVC!

Not enough stuff is getting smashed up in these test clips. How about throwing watermelons off an overpass, hitting someone in the face with an egg, or a breaking a priceless Ming vase with a sledgehammer?

And I want to see the classic "bullet through the playing card"
