Pretty excited, though have never spent so much on a lens before!
First thing I notice is how much better and fine grained the focusing action is than my Tamron 17-50 which I just sold...doing some informal lens tests with an Edmund resolution chart to see how it stacks up, but first impressions are favorable.

Informal results with my pixel peeping after shooting an edmund resolution chart are mixed, but I think consistent with tests read elsewhere.

Tripod, mirror lockup, brought the RAW images into Photoshop.
Center sharpness-resolving power goes to the Canon.

Edge sharpness and resolving power to the Tamron.
This seems to be consistent thru f stops(tested at 2.8,4,5.6)

Another plus in favor of the Tamron is that it exhibits almost no CA, which becomes pronounced towards the edges on the Canon.

But I primarily bought the Canon for the IS. Still think its a keeper, especially for the better focus throw. On the Tamrons it is extremely short.

Haven't tested autofocus on the Canon yet, but with the Tamron found it to be quite inconsistent and more prone to searching in low light.

If the Canon weren't well over 2X the price, I wouldn't be as critical, Haven't read good things about the Tamron VC so not really considering it.

2 questions
1- Will also be using the Canon for stills as well, if I am at all concerned about edge sharpness and CA should I purchase a 2nd copy and test aginst each other?

2-What effect does IS have on image quality assuming you are tripod mounted?
