Smuggler's Ransom- OFFICIAL THREAD

Regarding the chopper blades, the render takes an instantaneous snapshop of the helicopter at 24 frames per second. It's like an ultra-high-speed shutter so that it freezes the blades at whatever position they are in (a real-world camera blurs or smears the blades for the time the shutter is open). Thus, when the blades are turning significantly faster than the frame rate you get the illusion that they are spinning at a slower speed than they really are. You can sometimes see this artifact in real film where the wheels of a moving car appear to be spinning the wrong direction. When Brandon approves the chopper motion we turn on the motion blur feature of the renderer and it simulates an open shutter so that you'll see the familiar blur of spinning helicopter blades. We wait to do that til the end, though, because the setting I use actually renders 12 extra passes for each frame to create the motion blur.

CG stuff looks good. And motion blur will do good cause when you see any chopper in any movie, you can see the rotors clearly, with blur in between.

Like what Mark said.

Thanks man!

Hey, we're working on editing together some Podcasts titled: Smuggler's Ransom: Director's Diaries. We shot them during production. Just getting the footage digitized and editing them this week. We should have the first one on the site by this weekend.

One question, are the podcasts gonna be more behind the scenes kinda stuff, or more director commentary? Either way, I'm looking forward to them.

They'll be basically behind the scenes of us (Daniel and I) the directors talking about how things went on each production day, intercut with photos, and some BTS footage as well.

Yeah, the chopper looks amazing! Nice work Mark(vislaw)! I get the opportunity to see all the CG stuff before Brandon puts it up online.

dj - I've seen some of your work too bro and you do great work as well! That missile through the car was awesome! Two Thumbs Up!

Hey thanks for the encouragement and enthusiasm. Now that the chopper motion is close to being finished the transformation of the scene to a night shot should go quick. I'm doing some simple stuff that I think will really sell the scene and hopefully give people some ideas for the next time they need to shoot day for night.
