Smuggler's Ransom was a project that was conceived in the Spring of 2005. Daniel Noa brought me the concept of adapting a short stage-play into a short film, which would later expand into a long short/featurette. I loved the story, and thought it could be very well told in a film medium. We acquired the rights from the author Steve Losee and scriptwriting began. I wrote the first draft off of the original stage-play and a short novella Steve had also written.
By the end of 2005 we had a pretty polished script. In the meantime, Daniel & I produced the short film, A Price Too High, which also competed in the 2006 DVXuser Sci-Fest. The film was also seen by an acquaintance of Daniel, and he had an interest in investing in our next film. We were excited because we knew we needed some money to make Smuggler's. The budget for the film was finally secured in May of 2006.
We scrambled into pre-production with a July shoot day in sight. We were extremely blessed to get Anthony Tyler Quinn on board, most well known for his role as Mr. Turner in the show Boy Meets World. We shot the film in an extremely fast four days, with one small pick-up day. The post process took some time as our original composer dropped out, and we called on the services of the extremely talented Justin Durban, who was there for us in the crunch.
Finally in February of 2007 the film was done. We burned screener copies and began sending them to various studios and distribution companies. We also began sending the film to festivals and had several screenings over the summer. Finally in November a deal was reached with Cloud Ten Pictures, who produced the extremely successful Left Behind films, for the international and domestic distribution rights to the film. In February of 2008 an official release date was finally set, June 10, which is nearly two years since production of the film. It has been a long road, but it has all been worth it! Please stay tuned for even more information regarding the upcoming release! Thank you all for your support!
