smart Auto Focus for RED ONE?

Since it will be available from the upcoming October with the new Canon HD camcorders, is there any possibility to see such feature as RED one?

Or even working as an external device adding support to the lenses operation?

«Instant AF (Auto Focus) - The Next Generation Focusing System
Since it is critical to achieve very sharp focus when shooting in High Definition, the XH A1 and XH G1 models feature Canon's revolutionary new Instant AF focusing system. It offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy (compared to traditional autofocus systems). The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon's autofocus system, to significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This new system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus "hunting." Users can especially see the benefits of Instant AF in high brightness, and night shooting situations. Camera operators can capture fast, accurate focusing, even when following a moving subject.

I have been thinking about the whole modularity business with the Red camera. I know that many of you fully expect the Red camera to be a complete manual operation in every department but with every advancement of new technology comes new ideas and better methods of operating in many different areas. A professional camera = full manual is a statement many would probably fully endorse. Sure it seperates the men from the boys but is that the future?

The thought of automatic focus adjust or other automatic features like auto exposure could at times be taken to infer the camera is less professional. We have in this forum and elsewhere much heated debate with film v digital. As digital technology improves in resolution. dynamics, lattitude etc its use in preference to film will increase.

WHAT IF............Someone comes out with a brilliant auto focus and auto exposure camera (with full manual controls also) that eliminates the problems currently experienced.........WHAT THEN?

I read somewhere that Canon normally gives press release dates a mere couple of weeks in advance. This time it is months in advance. Thou must protect thy market share!! We now have still cameras with face recognition etc. what will Sony or others bring out soon?

I accept the manual only Red camera but is there a chance that in the very near future the idea of operating a camera fully automatic could become the normal and manual use only in exceptional circumstances?

Reds modularity is brilliant thinking for sure...... i hope their focus assist is brilliant too. But in the near future will Red still be adaptable to new technology within the auto only features of future camera's. Or would that type of thinking be condemned as only for the amateur videographer.

Just some food for thought, or a load of rubbish...i don't know?

It's interesting the recent general interest about the new Canons. Almost 8,000 views in a few days, 30 pages, etc. Also during these days, the RED sub-forum lost is major importance to that prosumer offer. I'm asking myself why?... Will it be 'cause the new run & gun features are so much appreciated by the INDIE shooters?...

«Just some food for thought» according Michael's own words and not rubbish...I'm sure!

If Canon's autofocus works as well as their DLSRs I would jump to use it! 90% of my still photography is in autofocus mode.

Wow thats real good news Graeme. When will we know more on that focus assist...IBC? Will there be critical focus capabilities on camera for 2k mode?

You'll get magic focus assist in all modes, and I don't think you'll see it until we show the finished camera working. But it's very cool, very radical, and works really well in the tests.

This is absolutely awsome.....................NEWS:) :) :)

If Red continues on like this we could (within two years) see sales of Red One being compared to the likes of an FX1................

Someone should start a new thread entitled Red who does'nt want one!!!

Graeme. Any way to give a hint as to whether this focus-assist is purely electronic based or is it a hardware-based unit?
