SmallHD v. TV Logic

I just got my TV Logic yesterday, with the scopes and color grading for luminance, color, etc. I am totally blown away by this monitor. I cannot right now imagine what a firmware upgrade would do for me, because this thing is already like a "Bat Utility Belt" for video. Love the transparent waveform that you can put in the corner of your screen at all times, in two sizes. Love the way I can create makers for 2.35, and then shade the outer region in grades from transparent to almost completely opaque. I am taking 1080/24 psf from the AF100 into the Nanoflash, then out of the Nanoflash into the TV Logic, via SDI. Looks and works perfectly. Body is magnesium, very solid. Bought the $65 Panny battery plate, which accepts my HVX batteries. The red focus assist is awesome, and you can change its color to whatever you want to, and its sensitivity is adjustable, so you can match it to the detial level you may have set in your camera. Love the on screen time code and audio meters. It rocks.

Good to hear, I may have to get one of these if I cant get the Small HD to work in 24psf
I think one strong point about TV Logic is that building high end broadcast monitors is their business, with this one probably being their cheapest. But it incorporates the features that their really high priced larger monitors have. In most businesses, experience is hard to replace.

Totally agree. TV Logic is known for its color and scaling and rich feature set for a given price point. This is their reputation in Hollywood, be it for location shoots, or post suites, plus TV stations and teleproduction facilities around the country. I was the first to offer a TV Logic monitor in the SF Bay Area rental community in early 2008 and my competitors followed suit, as did some AC's and DIT's. Their 7" monitor is $2500, the 5.6" has better resolution and similar features at $1595. The $1350 DVX User group buy through Film Tools puts a high-end production tool at a pretty affordable price point relative to any other monitor on the market that has anything close to the resolution or feature set.

You have just convinced me that this is the monitor for me. It was a choice between the smallHd and the TV Logic. Ordering one tomorrow first thing.

That's great news--they weren't carrying TV Logic when I checked with them last--glad they matched the DVX User group discount!

We saw this monitor and just had to sell it. We now sell the full TV Logic line, and will have more of them up on our website in the near future. The folks from TV Logic came by the other day and let us know they will have some very cool monitors to show at NAB too.

Does that mean you guys will have the firmware upgrade tool?
I really dont want to send my monitor to california whenever I need an firmware upgrade.

Yes, we will get one sometime next month. Jin from TVLogic is going to train our techs to do the upgrades.

How easy is it to toggle on/off the vectorscope, wfm, Y Level Check, Range Error and focus assist? These are great features, but do we have to go through a lot of submenus to enable/disable them?

Thanks.

Andy,
Will Abel be abel : ) to upgrade other TV LOGIC models for free as well? My LVM-071W needs the latest firmware upgrade.

The firmware upgrade procedure on the tv logic is a deal breaker for me.

I agree with that. We can't all of us own a LMP-200 update tool for upgrade Tvlogic monitor.

BUT .....what if upgrading DP6 has reached a limit of the unit and there is a replacement to come in near future?
Reed could probably enlighten us for that ....

Cause sdi output (and waveform, vector ) is a major reason for a Pro to own a tvlogic if all the rest are equals.
If DP6 has no more to upgrade (by writing software and not by sending the unit for hardware upgrading) then I would prefer the tvlogic.
I think that waveform will be added to the DP6 (SDI only version) by returning the unit to factory to reflash the chip.

In the end I actually ordered the TV Logic because I am aware that smallHD will be taking the DP6 to the next step but will require the unit to be sent back. As most people have realized, both are great monitors.

As I've said before, it's really hard for me to imagine what TVLogic could update to make this monitor any better. They got it right on the first try, or at least the version I have.

A quick question for you guys with the TVL regarding custom sizes.

I'm shooting a production later in the year that's Anamorphic (PL Lomo's with GH2/GH13/AF101) - so I'd like to create a custom mode to desqueeze the footage and monitor it. I know the DP6 does this - presuming the TVL has the same option? Essentially, as this is 2X Ana on a 16X9 sensor, it means custom A/R conversion. Just wanted to check on this.

Personal moan now - it's a pain being UK based - our price here is £1,100 so that's $1,770 plus 20% VAT = £1,320 ($2,125) - arghh!

Just out of curiosity, where did it come from that waveform etc on the dp6 would require it to be returned? I always thought a firmware update was in effect reflashing the chip to the latest operating system...and that can be done with the usb dongle, right?
