SmallHD DP4-EVF

SmallHD just notified me that they would take it under warranty. A+++ for costumer service!

That's very nice to hear, though I would warn others not to expect the same treatment. I also had my LCD burned (same day I received it), and was told that it specifically is NOT covered under warranty.

(8/18/11) *update, a SmallHD rep just emailed me to let me know that they will cover the cost of replacing the LCD, which is quite extraordinary of them. That said, please take care not to abuse this policy and be mindful of where you point that EVF!

Just found that the monitor doesn't like my 16GB thumbdrive, but a 4GB worked just fine; instructions recommend 2GB or smaller.

I've read several people's comments about setting the external monitor or EVF to black and white and using the red focus assist. Can you do that with the DP4?

That's a trick people do on the AF100 EVF because it's lousy. The SmallHD has much better tools for focusing and you don't really need a workaround to get critical focus right.

Zevf owner here. my gripe with these companies (zacuto, smallhd, cineroid ect) is why they cant make a dedicated EVF... instead of these pieced together things. Monitor and loop ect. they are trying to have a multipurpose option of using a monitor and then putting on a loop. I'd love a real evf like what redrock designed (which seems to be vaporware) or like RED bomb evf ...and stop trying to play both sides of the fence. If you want a monitor...buy a monitor...simple.

For the last two weeks I've been shooting with a DP4 from smallHD, testing it against a Zacuto EVF and a Marshall 5" screen. I also own a DP6 and I can see myself moving to a DP4 instead and using my DP6 for my crane.

After using all three, the DP4 was the best hands down on image quality, brightness, response and weight. The Zacuto had a nicer eyecup, but, both the Zacuto and the smallHD eyecups and magnification worked worse than even the EVF solution that comes with the FS100. If your eye isn't perfect in the Zacuto or the DP4 EVF you can get distortion around the outer edges of the image and cropping to your eye. Basically, both magnified a little too much.

I also like that it is a dual purpose system that I can use as an LCD as well when I don't need the eyecup (which mostly is outdoor use). personally.

Edit: As Logan pointed out, the DP4 is 800x480 and not 720p like I had thought. I wonder why it looks so much crisper to me.

It could be a better panel, better glass on top of the panel, really any number of things making it look better.

glad it works out for you Rick. I can see it as a plus for some people. If i hadnt gotten the Zevf (because it was available earlier) i'd have gone with the dp4 based on the reviews i've seen. The Zevf disappoints me in terms of image quality. But the other features it has are nice. I already have it...so i'll stick to it. cant bother to sell and re buy and all that drama (more drama for me as i dont live in the US). It clearly seems the dp4 has a better image than the zevf though.

My DP4-EVF arrived today.

Simply stunning quality and array of tools in such a tiny monitor. The loupe is a little big, and the eyecup does flop off - I pressed my face too hard against it earlier today, and the eyecup came off stuck to my face! I was outside and probably sweating, so...but it would have made for a great blooper..

I really like SmallHD's Peaking filter. It's not as obstructive as other Peaking filters like red-lines-on-black-and-white. It just sharpens the image, making focus very simple - at least for me - even when I was shooting at f5.6 outdoors with my 28mm.

Love it!

Does anybody know, where I can buy it in NY city? I will be there next week and that would be so nice...
Thanks benn

Try contacting SmallHD directly. Maybe they have a reseller in mind, or could ship it to you on arrival.
