Has P2 been completely murdered by KxS?

I've posted this elsewhere before but for those who might not have seen it, here are some frame grabs from a fishing show that I co-produce.

http://hawaiigoesfishing.com/images/festival_display/index.html

A variety of situations. Day, night, studio, low light. The gal in the red at the beach is actually a green screen shot in a studio.

All done with the Sony EX1. I used to have a Panasonic HVX for a year before getting the Sony. I sold the HVX shortly after getting the EX1 and got a second EX1 to do multi-cam shoots and to have a backup.

The camera's been in some rugged conditions. Still works fine. Gets great results. The features I miss most: The HVX's record-ahead buffer and 4 channels of audio. What Sony did better: full 1080 x 1920 raster, putting the focus aid button where I can get to it without looking, and the much longer recording times of the SxS cards.

As for editing, the 10-frame GOP doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Are you suggesting i'm a habitual drug user for suggesting that this discussion is pointless... that mr.jazz appears to be on a mission to prove the most irrelevant and boring thing known to mankind.

Irrelevant because as Perrone already pointed out, people buy their cards because they have to for their choice of respective camera anyway. The only murdering going on here is the killing of our time and intellectual capacity on irrelevant bs point scoring.

I suggest this thread is locked - simply because it is sheer crap, and instead it should be suggested people put their time towards penning entries for Lossfest!

Then there could be a new rule that says... any crappy ex / hvx is the best forum thread be banned - because its a death knell to intelligence.

Come on... hehe isn't there anyone else up for locking these crappy threads? Somebody else, it can't just be me that thinks there detrimental?

...the guy that obsesses over his camera's megabits is the same guy that measures his own megabits every morning... given how often ex users seem to obsess over numbers, im now convinced that most EX users suffer from intense feelings of penis envy, hey i should start a thread asking...

"Why do EX users suffer from such Penis Envy?"

Because that would be as relevant and meaningful as the crap that negatively compares we see posted too often.

.

I'd just like to point out that I actually own the EX3 which is considerably larger and more massive than the EX1. So I find your comments out of line and think you should get penilized for your remarks and hung out to dry. Very slanderous sir.

Muhahaha yeah but what about the guy with the PDW-700! He'll be a god among men hehe

Of course my joke is really to highlight my point about the absurdity of these camera comparison discussions (in case anyone grabbing their pants right now gets seriously offended...) because in the end they are all ego driven, and we all know what Freud say's about that!

Yes, I'm very fascinated by the big step forward done by introducing the ex1 to the market. But I'm not a ex1-Messiah, but just a guy who's fascinated by all kinds of technical stuff. I'm studying electrical engineering and computer science at a university, so thinking about technical stuff is actually my job. Certainly it sounds geeky for you, but it just breaks my heart if I see people standing in front of great technical solutions and not realizing it, because they are fatuous or blind. I try to open their eyes, but then I realize that I just saw the tip of the iceberg of their ignorance, and then I give up... ;)

So what I have gathered here so far is yes P2 has been murdered by KxS (price wise)...

Not a lot of cheap options for us...
Obviously you haven't been reading the thread.

If you want a cheap option, that's what AVCHD is for. Half the cost of KxS per minute.

It doesn't. But he said "sd", meaning the SD memory card slot on the side (which is primarily used for loading/saving scene files and user files, and performing firmware updates).

Oh, I totally misread that. Hopefully the link I posted gets him the info he needs.

All I'm saying is my interpretation of this thread was two recording mediums both started out at about the same price for 8 or 16 gigs and now one has a dramaticly cheaper work around. Avchd has always been low cost.

Something else to consider in this cost-per-minute discussion: The cost of storage.

Eventually all this material has to go somewhere for permanent archive.

In the 1080p30 format, P2 is about a minute per gigabyte. XDCam EX is about three minutes per gigabyte.

I read it, the topic is has P2 been mrdered by KxS not avchd.
Remove AVCHD from the response, and look at the first sentence again because it was meant to stand alone. Point being, far from being "murdered", P2 is instead the dominant tapeless acquisition format in professional/broadcast applications. By a factor of somewhere around 5 to 1. It doesn't look too "murdered" to me, by anything - not by XDCAM disc, not by SxS, not by KxS, and not by AVCHD.

The second sentence in my post (about AVCHD) was meant separately as a response to your statement about there being no cheap options. I was saying that if you want a cheap option, AVCHD costs about 60% of what KxS costs.

Uh oh. The HVX/HPX are back to being 720p cameras again.

Man these arguments are nutty. Why can't we all just shoot what we have and be happy. Damn.

What have we learned?

1. Both camera's can produce beautiful images.

2. P2 cards are too expensive (anyone disagree?).

3. Panny loyalist remain in Panny camp and Sony loyalist remain in Sony camp.

4. Did I mention that p2 cards are too expensive. (I think you know where I stand)

Well i mean lets face it, when is recording media not too expensive, we're paying to record hd dvc pro not xdcam hdv, theres bonuses and trade offs.

I think its fair to say p2 could be cheaper, but its not dime a dozen on the sxs either.

Theres probably guys that would moan even their mini dv tapes arent cheap enough!

But your right acoel - both cams produce beuatiful images, and nobodies minds are gonna be changed about their respective cams. Now lets all enter Lossfest !

The hpx basically is a slightly above 720p native cam.

and the images look DAMN good. and clean.

Let's examine the constructiveness of a part of this dicussion:
EX codec render time - 230 minutes
DVCProHD render time - 154 minutes.

36 minutes saved.
Noel brings up an interesting point.
XDCAM-EX has 1920x1080 pixels. DVCPRO-HD has 1280x1080.
So if you have to render only 66% of the pixels it isn't remarkable that it takes just 66% of the time, is it?
Mr Jazz ain't that simple... and totally innaccurate way of comparing the two.
I didn't compare anything, I just explained where the difference in rendering-time comes from. (Your NLE doesn't care of 4:2:0 vs. 4:2:2)
Thats an inaccurate statement. DVCProHD 1920x1080 4:2:2 i-frame from the HPX3000 does not increase render time.
I'm sorry, but you err. DVCPRO-HD doesn't support 1920x1080. The HPX3000 uses the AVC-codec for full-hd-recording.
DVCProHD doesnt record square pixels. So 1280x1080 non square pixels results in the same image size as 1920x1080 square pixels.
You agree, that 1280x1080 is less rendering-work than 1920x1080? And so it will take less time? But it will be less sharp?
Not when its acquired from the 3000's 1920x1080. Not at all.
(...)
Render time is based on frame size not pixels
You can't acquire 1920x1080 from hpx3000 with DVCPRO-HD, because DVCPRO-HD doesn't support 1920x1080. Period.
hpx3000s 1920-signal will be downsampled to 1280 or 1440 before DVCPRO-HD-encoding.
(...)
Render time is based on pixels not on something imaginary like frame-size.
All I was doing was trying to correct statements here. But lawriejaffa doesn't like it, if I try to bring light into the dark. So the next logical step for him is to say:
Oh what a mind numbing discussion, mr. jazz are you on commission or something? ;)
mr.jazz appears to be on a mission to prove the most irrelevant and boring thing known to mankind.
It seems to me that lawriejaffa isn't very open minded. He likes to camouflage his nescience, but feels disturbed by me.

And in the end an interesting conclusion:
Panny loyalist remain in Panny camp and Sony loyalist remain in Sony camp.
nobodies minds are gonna be changed about their respective cams.
Actually I'm not surprised that some minds don't change here...

Er not really, to be honest the guy that quotes over 15 times in a single post is the one that is clearly disturbed.

Look i know what its like to be a guy at uni, studying a less than cool subject, why i can't imagine how tough it is to do electrical engineering and computer science at a university and fit in arguments about memory cards here... and probably arguments about the superiority of one dungeons and dragons ruleset over another.

You are young my friend... young, use that youth to make love to beautiful women... enjoy fine drinks... live.... *say it with me* liiiive.

But to quote 15 times over a debate about memory cards... that is 'death' mon amie. Look in the mirror and remind yourself,

'i quoted over 15 times in a single post because memory cards mean that much to me'...

Aha... now stop - please... for your own sake... stop. Instead try reading the entries into ScriptFest III... introduce yourself to that shy girl Dorothy in the computer science class... she probably likes you! Despite your pen stains and thick rim glasses ;)
