"slow mo" method doesnt work??

Yo dudes,

I am told by countless people that if you shoot 60i at 1/120 shutter on a DVX, then put it in a 24p timeline in FCP, then slow it down to 40%, it will be the best slo motion possible on a dv camera.

whenever I do this, it comes out really choppy.

I've had some of my good friends even tell me this, and it just doesnt seem to work whenever I try it!!:violin:

Any suggestons?

Have you rendered it out? If you don't have the horsepower in your computer, the prerendered video will be choppy. I use Vegas and I've not had any problem. I shot this clip in 24p and then stretched it out four times it's original length. In the editor it looked like crap, but once rendered it looks like, well, you decide. I've done the 60i and 40% thing as well. Looks really nice after rendering.

You have to do more than just slow it down in FCP. You should probably apply the deinterlace filter at least. I recommend finding a set of FREE plugins called Too Much Too Soon. It has a special filter for doing 60i slomo.

yes, Im on a powermac with 2 gb of RAM...and I rendered and everything!

it doesnt have interlace flicker or anything...it looks like really choppy footage...

I've tried 24 fps and 23.98...neither seem to work.

my main projects are in a 29.97 timeline, I was planning on slowing it down in the 24 (or 23.98 fps) timeline then exporting the clip, then putting it back in the main 29.97 timeline.

it's 60i footage. you have to put it in 29.97 timeline for it to not be choppy. then you gotta convert it to 23.98 to mix with your other footage. you can't just put 60i footage directly into a 23.98 timeline and not expect problems.

yes I know, but if thats the case, why do people say to put the 60i footage into a 24 fps timeline then slow it down to 40%? thats what I tried...

and I have been doing the after effects method for a while now, and I'm not really happy with the results.

there is flicker on some sharp edges and the overall footage ends up looking "muddy"

Sweet video! Who sang that?

The first shot of the skier falling, with slow mo worked really well man!

Good job,

Robbie

I didn't notice a slo-mo issue in your footage. What part are you talking about?

The only thing I did notice is some interlacing in the fast motion stuff (in particular, the t-bar fast mo)...but that's really, really minor.

Nice work

Althought the motion is nice and smooth, I find the shimmering to be quite bothersome. Only really noticeable on static shots with alot of horizontal thin lines. Does anyone know a trick to get rid of this shimmering. I've searched everywhere. My guess would be to move every second frame(really 1 field) up one line of res. Any thoughts?

vidwerk.
