Single PCMCIA

shucks. anybody got an update on this issue?
The update is that it's never gonna happen; for some reason you cannot make a simple USB->P2 adapter. There are reasons that the Panasonic units cost what they do; the cheap ones don't work and can't work. I tried to develop such a product with a company who could actually do it; they told me that yes they'd make it, yes it would do exactly what I'm asking, and yes it'd cost $2000.

So I'm convinced that no inexpensive/cheap USB->P2 adapter will ever exist. Better to look to the duel-systems ExpressCard->P2 adapter, or just bite the bullet and get a P2 Store or the Panasonic P2 Drive, because nothing else is (likely) coming.

thanks for the reality check Barry... Kind of a bummer for me having a macbook.. not the pro.. But my trusty p2store is here and working great. Ther'es just been times where I wish I could just switch over to loading to the laptop when the p2store is full... now that would be cool...

You can. THe P2 Store can work as a pass-thru slot, so you could plug the P2 Store in and import the footage from the card directly to the Macbook's internal hard disk.

I just don't buy it. I can't believe that it just won't happen or it's that cost prohibitive. We're talking about an ancient hardware standard here.

This certainly looks for real to me:

As much as we'd like to think we're the center of the universe with our HVX200's, there are mountains and mountains of CardBus wireless broadband adapters that IT departments are not in any hurry to replace. There's certainly a market for this. If Duel Systems can really deliver before the end of the year, you can bet I'll be first in line.

I would tend to agree with you here, I mean they did choose an established STANDARD. To me it would seem that a driver update might be necessary, but it shouldn't be anything more than that...

That said, I do not not build PCMCIA hardwar, nor write drivers for it, so I could be completely wrong, and I'm willing to admit and accept that... it just doesn't make sense to me though.

He is sayng that P2 to USB will never happen. the Dual Systems adapter is NOT USB. CardBus to Express card is not a big deal. Expess Card is a Newer Faster Tech, no need to spend all those resorces to dumb it down to go through the ancient technology of USB. Thats for your mouse and keyboard.

If you can sell a laptop for $500.00 that has a PC Card slot, then it seems to make sense that once you take off the screen, remove the hard drive and keyboard, and anything else, then it would be possible to make a inexpensive p2 card reader.

I'm not an engineer. I just play one for the purposes of this post.

I agree that it "should be" possible. But in practical terms, at the quantities these things would sell at, nobody's going to do it.

Which is why I recommend that anyone who wants such a thing just buy a $500 PC laptop with a PCMCIA slot on it!

Just to let everyone we're in beta on a single slot PCMCIA to USB with support for P2 cards on Macs (universal). Price will be around $160 and we hope to ship by October 1st.
What happened to this guy? That was a year and a half ago. Did he eventually come to same conclusion as Barry?

He also said:
Right now the hardware is in place (although we are still working on the casing) and we're testing the software side.
Saying the hardware 'is in place' implies that side of things was working. I'm all for companies coming here to canvas for opinion and to let us know about new products, but it seems too many have over ambitious claims, which only serve as a disappointment to this community.

BarnStormer, the least you could do is post a follow up to explain what went wrong and finally put this to rest.

Hi Mark, I as many have been looking for a cost effective solution, I narrowed it down to the Amtron reader,--
http://www.amtron.com/reader/pcdtp110cs_picture.htm
I can't get one at my location to test in my G5 tower, Amtron don't ship OS, and their support/sales haven't responded to email requests. I would have thought that connecting the reader component of the Amtron pcdtp110 to the ATA (Optical) cable of a mac tower would work?. maybe the only thing stopping that may be a software/driver. surely that's not an impossible assignment.
cheers

USB is for mouse and keybord, not professional video. I would be much more interested Firewire, SATA, or express card adaptor... but I guess you gotta crawl before you can walk.

USB, SATA, FireWire, even PCMCIA or Express Card are just ports, the specs to Pro Video are related to speed and compatibity, none of those are treated as "professional video capable ports"

I use USB and FireWire to ingest and edit HD cinema and video files directly from Hard disc to my laptop.
