A friend of mine has gotten over a million frames from his Minolta Dimage A1, and he still has most of them to prove it. His camera went bad because of the Sony CCD defect, but Minolta just fixed that free and the thing is still going.
I was worried about killing the shutter on my 20D, but I think the whole assembly only costs about $50. The bigger worry on an SLR is the mirror flapping up and down millions of times. The wear and noise of it is what makes SLR cameras inferior to others for time-lapse. Too bad you can't lock the mirror up indefinitely.
