GH2 Sigma 20mm F1.8

I use the 24mm 2.8 superwide II and love the lens also for photography. The closest focusing distance is 15cm, great for its use. Lens has good sharpness wide open already. Bought it for 50€ around.

20mm and 1.8 is of course superb..

Just another quick test w/ the Sigma 20mm, this time using my Vari ND that just came in today :) A bit boring, but I think I'm gonna enjoy this lens overall. Love the field of view; 20mm is where it's at!

This is the most filmic so far. I am in the process of developing actual film curves for the GH1 and GH2. These curves will replicate tones from certain film stocks as closely as possible. I am already seeing tones that bring back memories from great Kodak and Fuji still photography in the old days.

All these methods combined will turn these cameras into amazing digital film cameras on the budget.

By the way, what is the difference between "no trespassing" and "absolutely no trespassing"? :D

Speaking of wide angles, I don't want to steal the Sigma thunder, but it does appear a bit soft. I had a Olympus 0.8x wide adapter and together with Hexanon 40 mm f1.8 pancake lens it produced this image from GF1 720p mjpeg video:

I sold it but now I realize it was a mistake. Combined with a razor sharp Minolta MD 28 f2.8 it would have been a 22.5 mm lens, and possibly useful at full aperture as well. The Olympus 0.8 wide adapter has 55 mm thread, so fits directly on the Hexanon and Minolta. Another wide that comes to mind is the Tokina AT-X 20-35 mm f2.8 zoom. This zoom has full manual focus (and auto focus) and Nikon version has aperture ring. Only the focus turns backwards on the Nikon version. But the EF version should work with the Kipon adapter.

These are possibly sharper alternatives to the Sigma that come to mind. Link to full size image above: http://www.fourseasonshd.com/blogOlympus08xLarge.png

I expect it to be that soft, though. At 20/1.8, you can't ask for much. 40/1.8 is a different focal length entirely, I don't think you can compare them.

You can compare the 20/1.7 M4/3 lens to the 20/1.8 Sigma, though. That lens is definitely sharper wide open it looks like. But, me personally, I am very happy with the lens at 1.8, haven't tried it at 2~2.8 but I'm sure it only gets better there.

The Hexanon actually becomes 32 mm with the Olympus 0.8 and the Minolta 28 mm would become 22.5 mm (if it doesn't start vignetting). I don't think I took the image above aperture wide open, but the combination definitely had that filmic look where you step out of the focused area is like stepping into another world. It would be interesting to see full size frame grabs from the Sigma 20 mm f1.8 to see the colors.

Hope this isn't too off-topic, but anyone have other impressions of the sigma *24mm* f1.8??

I already have a 28mm and 18mm lens, and a 22 or 24 would be ideal for me. 24mm / 25mm looks like the most normal focal lens length to my eyes (whereas 20mm is more wide-normal and 28mm is just on the verge of short telephoto (like 35)).

But the 20mm looks quite nice... hmmm I wish it was a 22mm!

I brought it up in another thread but I'd like to see some side by side footage with the sigma 20mm f1.8 and the panny 20mm f1.7 with it's contacts covered... If for no other reason than to see how big a difference in actual sharpness (Instead of in cam sharpening) that there is between the two.

Have you guys tried the Samyang 24mm f1.4 with the GH2? Thinking about grabbing that for when I buy a GH2 so I can use it for my 5D as well.
