Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese

Just saw it! Great movie in all aspects, the continuity issues were on purpose for sure. Even right at the beggining on the boat he is seen with a wedding ring and then they cut to a wide shot of Ruffalo and DiCaprio and DiCaprio does not have a ring. The ring is not in all the shots if you look closely.

The glass of water shot may have been representing the womans insanity?

There is a lot going on in this movie and after a few watches I think you could really pick up everything.

Whos was the guy in Ward C he was talking to??? A flashback would have helped. Or maybe DAH DAH! He just knows him from being in Ward C???

I think that the absence of the glass is actually the POV of Leo's character. I believe it was a POV shot.

Also, the bandage on his head is at the beginning of the movie until the end. What does that mean to you?

I found the movie to be pretty sad actually.

That covers the whole where his soul escaped a la Marsellus Wallace in "Pulp Fiction".

Not imprresed with the film overall, I didn't think it had originality going for it.

The plot reminded of three movies meshed together, Six Sense, The Village and A Beautiful Mind. There are other movies that basically have the same plot but their names escape me. I expected a real detective story set in a prison with perhaps a few supernatural happenings here and there. Instead the movie ventured into a direction very similar to those movies I mentioned.

Other than good cinematography, the movie, in my opinion, had very little merit.

Just my 2 cents.

I tended to enjoy the movie better when I realized it was in fact a character study and not a haunted house movie.

I agree with your opinion but to me the movie seemed to follow the same formula as the other movies I mentioned, which kinda ruined it.

While my daughter and I were watching the movie, she whispered to me what was going to happen through the rest of the movie, this she said about half way through the movie. She ended up up being correct, which says a lot about the predictabiliy of the plot.

The plot is very predictable, I guessed the same thing. They gave it all away right at the beggining.

DiCaprio is holding his wife in one of those dreams, they show her on fire, bleeding, and then wet. Maybe 30min later they mention that she drowned the kids.

Now the only part that I could not predict and I should have is when DiCaprio shot his wife. I thought for sure she was going to shoot herself.

Am I the only one who thought the soundtrack was terrible in a couple places? Way too prominent and discordant. I realize this was probably done on purpose but all it managed to accomplish was to distract me and take me out of the scene.

I enjoyed it. In the end when I saw robert richardson as the dp I stood up and clapped out of inner homage. One thing that really got me though was at the begining when the main Cop is laying down the rules in the shutter island office(when they introduce the whole whip pan thing) they cut away from the main cop guy for a moment while he's still talking and the audio change was soooooo obvious to me, like right on the cut... then back to the original sound when I see him (real quick).

Then way later in the film Leo's in the jeep with nazi guy and there is a clear as day mismatch cut where leo's looking away from the nazi guy(close to frame) then he's looking directly at him in the next shot. I almost wondered afterward if some of this stuff was intentional cause he was obviously trying to make things unmatched in the dream world.

Ultimately, I still loved it. And Im not a leo fan either. But that audio blip still sits with me.

I thought is was influenced by several movies, not just Secret Window. The story was completely derivative and predictable, even though the acting and filmmaking was well done.

And yes, as others have mentioned, the editing was terrible. There is cutting to jar and unnerve the viewer, but this was just plain lazy in parts. As someone said earlier, Scorcese goes for performance over continuity, but this was just plain bad.

SPOILERS

Watching it again for the 2nd time is very amusing. Some of the way character's play lines work so much better knowing what's going on.

It's obvious that the continuity issues were on purpose, but more often than not, they came off looking like mistakes and were very distracting. If distraction was the goal, then success!

Not every off-beat choice works as a style. The shuffled sequence order in Pulp Fiction was a style. The reverse order of Memento was a style. And this, for the most part, was not a style. An unknown director would have a hard time getting away with this, if at all.

Th-th-that's what I think.
