Should I use the 50mm or 18-55mm for a pool tournament

you'll probably be starving for light, which means fast 50mm prime

other than that, it depends on how far you are and what kind of shots you want to take

I'd say: bring both, start with the 50mm, if you have enough light and want wider shots, go for the 18-55
 
That's a tough question. On an APS-C based Canon that 50mm will be like an 80mm. 80mm is tough to shoot with in small, cramped places but it's a lot faster than the 18-55. So both aren't great for what you'd be doing but I'd agree with NormanBates - bring both and see what happens.

Definitely will need wider than a 50 to cover that. I would use the 18-55 and get a wide adapter. x.7 will get you to about 12mm. You can also use your 50 for detail shots and the players but to get the feel to the pool table the wider the better.

Sure, but the 18-55 at f/3.5 (18mm) would probably be enough. I took that in a car while driving downtown:

As I said, I'm pretty sure it would be enough with the 18-55mm. It's not like if the whole place would be in a living room. And not like if the place would be lit with a 60w bulb neither...

For sure. The 18-55mm gives enough versatility. I'd bring the 50mm f/1.8 too, maybe for close-ups and transitions videos/shots. That would give a nice touch. But I'd shoot mainly using the 18-55mm.
 
Ok fellows, I ran for a friend to back me up with a JVC HD110 this had on i Think a 18-88mm zoom TV Lens or something like that on it. That was backing me with shots from a high level, while I was using the 50mm, for the close ups and b-shots.
