So I have a Audio Technica 4073a but need phantom power for that bugger so I am looking for a cheaper bolt on shotgun that connect right into the GH3 now that I can monitor audio!

How about this -Audio Technica At897 - looks to have similar specs but a little longer than my 4073a ? I'll hopefully be booming with the more expensive mic but for backup sound around $200 ????? (I have actually rigged up the 4073a via a battery powered presonus firebox into the GH3 and it works like a charm with a small amount of noise! - diy field mixer!!! - yes I want a sd302 but $$$$$)

4073a - $900

Even though you can monitor audio, you don't want to control levels using the GH3's settings because of the built in limiter. You ideally want to set the GH3's audio to the lowest level and feed it a strong audio signal. This means that between the camera and the mic, you want a mixer/preamp. The iRig Pre looks to be an affordable option, though I have not tested it myself to see how it compares to other preamps.

If you're just looking for an on-camera mic, I'd look into something more akin to the Rode VideoMic Pro. I'm quite happy with that for run and gun shooting despite the lack of full levels control.

Thanks guys, will take a look at the XLR adaptor. I'm not looking to adjust the levels on the fly just need a good backup track and I don't want to pay $1200 for the sd302, all other mixer are not going to cut it. The Rode VideoMic looks nice but the AT will probably have better sound and just wondering if it'll work.

I might just throw the expensive mic on top and use the $40 XLR adaptor though.
