SHORT: Modern War Gear Solid

[POSTER IMAGE COMING SOON]

A few months ago, with all the trouble between Activision and Infinity Ward (game companies), we decided to make a short film parody of the situation with our 7D cameras.

PART I:

I held quite a few roles on this production. I did a lot of filming, after effects compositing, 3D rendering (helicopter) and some of the music. I also did the final pass of audio editing .

Equipment we used:

2x 7D
Sigma 30mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Canon 28-135mm kit lens. We tried out a variety of other lens as well, but were unhappy with their performance.

All audio was recorded with a Sony PCM-D50.

Editing was done with FCP and AE. Audio was edited in FCP, ProTools and Logic Pro.

We also used the Blackbird Stabilizer which I have to say was one of the BEST purchases I made!

This was a lot of fun and pre-production has started for a final episode in this short. (We split it up due to the length limitations on YouTube). And I cannot wait to get it finished.

In any case, thanks for looking!

UPDATE:

Part II:

Part III is in preproduction. We've gotten some sponsors for the third part and so we will begin filming shortly! We've got some new equipment we are trying out on the third part.

[BEHIND THE SCENES IMAGES AND GAG REAL COMING SOON]

I liked a few of the running gags and especially liked when he was digging through the box with the guys legs sticking out. Funny scene there.

Nice work.

Thanks :) A lot of them are humorous takes on Snake's character as he has acted throughout the video games. I believe we are releasing part 2 next week. We just wanted to have a lot of fun doing this. I bet if we cut a laughter reel, it might be longer than the whole project! :)

I loved it. Those Moustaches are effing AMAZING!! I could not stop laughing at those things. I thought the action scene was shot VERY VERY well. Great job on these.

Thanks! Yeah, the mustaches were great. Surprisingly spirit glue works well. Now when I see that actor, he looks strange without it! :)

I can imagine. Must have been an absolute blast to shoot.

Once again, nice work. Looking forward to part deux.

It's funny, we've gotten a few responses of 'with such production value, why didn't you do something original' and I think a lot of people don't understand that this was absolute fun to do AND allowed us to pay tribute to some GREAT video games. This started as a MUCH smaller project just to test out our 7D cameras. Then, it got more and more epic.

Of course, then I told the director, that's it, I've always wanted to do some 3D for film, so I downloaded blender and got to work. So we just kept one upping the other in terms of quality and content we were bringing together. For the third part (in pre-production) we are TOTALLY going to one up each other to the point of insanity!

Of course, lesson learned, not doing anymore 3D in Blender. GREAT free program, SO HARD to animate in and just not as powerful as Maya or 3DStudio which I have more experience with.

As a note, most of this film is shot with the Sigma 30mm F1.4. I CANNOT say enough good about this lens. That and the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 really are solid lenses.

For part 3 I am going to work with an 85mm lens as there is some shot compositions that will require it.

Congrats on this, man! I saw Micah posting about this on facebook a while back and I was unaware how great it really was going to be. I love a lot of the small details you covered (keeping personalities, the random calls to snake at inopportune times, the freaking box!). Kudos!

Thanks! Yeah, we had a bunch of fun doing this! I joined their crew during the post production of Dogs of Chinatown and have been working with them ever since.

We can't wait to get part 3 done as it is the most epic of all! :)

It's crazy! We are getting ready to release the scenes that didn't make the cut, alternatives and such, cause they are REALLY funny. And, we are not far from starting filming on part 3.
