Shooting 24p w/out Tripod... is there a way.

Hi guys, I have a job coming up with me filming a construction site; it will be for a web video maybe DVD down the track. I have a GH2 (PAL) and a GH13 (NSTC) I'm in PAL land. I'll be using the GH13 for a massive time-lapse of the whole day (GH13, no time limit). Whereas the GH2 Pal, I’ll be using for everything else. There will be a lot of action shots (no time or room for a tripod) and interviews. I love 1080 24p but I’m worried that my rig won't cut it in 24p land. I did a test with going hand held and using the EVF (three points of contact). It was pretty juddery, I think my rig will be even worse. I know for the interviews I can used 24p but I don't want to go back to 720p for everything... or because it's a web video, should I even bother and just stick with 720p (17mbs) for all the shots; including the interviews?

cheers Aaron

Are you using a OIS lens? I run around with the 14-140 all the time with no stabilizing rig. I only start to see unacceptable shake at the tippy end of the zoom.

No, I'll be using a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 lens. I found that it's the best all round lens... I have the 20mm pancake but i'll be using the on the GH13.

Are you saying you can't use any stabilizing equipment? No tripod, monopod or shoulder brace?

A 90mm equivalent lens (is that correct, a 1.8 x factor?) is going to be tough to keep stable handheld, especially if the shooter is moving at all. I can't recommend the 14-140 highly enough. We have around 30 good primes here to choose from, and yet for running and gunning, the 14-140 ends up staying on the GH2 (and before the GH13) much of the time. And now with the crop-mode zoom, man, amazing what kind of shots you can get, even handheld.

speaking from a pal perspective 24p looks horrible even tripod shots have a unnatural juddery look that is nothing like film, plus with 24p moire and ailsing spoil it more, this is what i find anyway.

A 50mm is really not the best lens for hand-held work. You will almost never see that in normal productions, unless it's for insert shots in a Bourne movie. :-) Some form of zoom lens would be ideal so you have more choices in how you frame your "action shots" as you say. Hand-held action shots on a 50mm could induce nausea very quickly. If the construction site is outdoors where you have plenty of light, I concur with others that the 14-140 kit lens would be a great option. Stop down to f5.6 to have an easier time focusing, and with the zoom you'll get the benefit of OIS, nice wide-angle hand-held shots, and steadier hand-held interview shots where you can zoom in to 35 or 50mm, or more if needed. I know people slam the kit lens, but in this case it seems like a much better choice than a 50mm prime.

Try the 561bhdv. It will give you stabilisation and it is portable.

Yeah, sorry, I don't think the 50mm (90+ equivalent) is going to work very well hand held almost regardless of rig. That's very telephoto for hand held, even without rolling shutter issues. The Oly 14-54 f2.8-3.5 is a fairly cheap, faster alternative to the stock 14-140.

I drag around my super-mobile tripod like a ball-and-chain. I've shot with it in the back of a limousines, on crowded party yachts in rough "seas", and all sorts of other places. :D It's well worth the trouble, IMHO, unless you're going for a specific "look" or something. Good luck!

My experience says dont use the 50mm for handheld. As said: its 90mm equivalent. I dont know anybody who can keep a 10 sec shot quite calm with a lense like that.
Take some of your earnings and buy the 14-45mm Panasonic, its the better choice and take a monopod - that works.

I recommend you to use a video monopod as Manfrotto 561BHDV, fluid head, no space needed, and better stabilized shots.

Cheers

What are you talking about? This makes no sense at all.
