sharpest DVX/SGpro footage ever - full rez grabs

i spent a good amount of time getting perfect focus on the SGpro's GG. i used a program on my computer to view the live stream from the DVX at 200% magnification. i perfectly set the focus with the adapter ON and focusing on a detailed newspaper - this is a much better method than just focusing on the grain when the adapter is off. i have found that perfect focus on the grain is ever so slightly off perfect focus on the picture when the adapter is on...

also i was using a custom scene file that gives me the sharpest (although grainy) image without compromising other aspects.

detail +1(slight sharpening to give a little bite but doesn't degrade image)
master ped -3 (this sets black at black)
freq = thin (most resolution)
gama = norm (gives a nice contrasty image)
colour = norm1 (this gives realistic colours with norm gama. though it saturates the greens more)
everything else zero

shot in 25p 4:3 then flipped and added a 1.85 matte in post. also added the nattress chroma filter to fix the reds.

here are some full rez grabs from some tests...

50mm f2 AI @ f5.6 (this is one of the best 50mm lenses ever made at it's best aperture)
DVX @ f4-5.6 (nice aperture to be at. gives enough DOF for the GG to be perfectly in focus. also it's where the DVX's lens is sharpest)

Those look great man:)

The first and the last are my favorites!

Absolutely stunning!

I had an excactly opposite situation today.. I shot a musicvideo and it's just insanely soft..
Had some issues with the GG I think..

But the musicvid is still cool though.. the softness gave it a bit of "flare" :P

Anyway.. this isn't about me.. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

Would really like to see some footage from this!

Yeah dude these are great. Really sharp.

What program did you use? The firewire is out on my dvx so is there anyway I can still do the focusing method?

and tommetass- the last thing I shot seemed soft too. My edge to edge sharpness was not there at all...

i like the fourth one. those look amazing and you said "grainy"...WHERE?!?!? those stills look great!

tom, my last music video was super soft as well!!! might be some kind of jinx with the dvx/sgpro combo :)

pfista, i was using the demo of BTVpro. it's a mac program. it's the only program that gives real time streaming on my old shi*ty mac. there are other programs like DV monitor and flipflop that do the same thing but they lag big time on my mac. if you cant use firewire i'd just use a nice CRT tv.

as for edge to edge. i'd say zoom in more if you can. i'm at the max zoom my dvx can do before losing focus with the non flipSGpro. 74. also i need to be there.. if i'm any wider you can see the tube in 4:3. i really like shooting in 4:3 :)

shaun, i've been doing a bunch of scene file experiments and fine tuning my sgpro config to get the best image possible. it's been days and days of boredom induced testing :) i was on holidays from school

i've been developing a few scene files for specific things. i have the perfect "interview" scenefile. it gives the most true to real life skin tones and is the most flattering one for people with blotchy skin. this is just a test of my latest "sharp and neutral" one. but it comes with a fair amount of grain.... you can see it more in the played back footage Novelt!!!

the footage from this test is just these frames but with me pulling in and out of focus to get it perfect. it's just a test, nothing really cool. i had some other cool footage but i've ran out of room on my external and can't import anything :( but i will render it out what i've got and post it!! that'll take a few hours :(

thanks everyone!!!

Nice stuff Patrick,

looks really good. Sweet clips on vimeo as well, really enjoyed your work on there and look forward to seeing more from you.

Cheers.

thanks chris!

i put the vid up. i find it quite boring... i mainly did this so you could download a full rez clip... but after rendering it all out for 2 hours (slow computer) it was all blocky and horrible.... so i've just put it up to view and not download. sorry. i really cant be bothered doing it all again coz the content's not worth it.

enjoy! :)

those grabs do look good. but i can't forgive the noise in the lower part of the mids in the skin tones.

sharp indeed.

That is pretty sharp. I need to try that out with a tv and some RCA cables. I really liked using the extra focus button on the HVX to focus on the grain. Too bad the DVX does not have that ability.
