FS7: Share videos, test footage, etc.

Yes, I agree. For me, a low contrast LUT is the best place to start the grade. 'Start' being the operative word - LUTs are rarely a one click solution.

That is an acceptable position.

Mine is different - I am (coming from Capture One/Stills) used to my 'LUT' applying full contrast with inherent clipping top/bottom and then recovering stuff. I find that recovering areas (like the sky) simpler than adding portions of contrast and particularly saturation to the mid section of the image. I love the SLOG3 luts as they manage saturation so well.

What the Arri Lut (in my video) does is interesting.. add good contrast through the image but just hold the highs/lows - very different to the Canon LogC lut which clips and is what feels natural to me.

To some extent the Arri LUT has actually created a new visual aesthetic. (from one hit lut application) and that aesthetic is good considering the 'one click' workflow.

We should probably start a footage/frames only thread and have NO comments let people draw their own conclusions.

Anyway this is a boring shot that greatly pleases me.

CustomSlog,
<P>5500k with -17 magenta dialing in profile.
4000 ISO
Nikkor 28-85+booster
Dedo DLed4.1 and 1X1 softbox.
Post: Slog->LC709, mild curve down. NO adjustments to colour.

Why does the shot please me? Because thats my standard vox pop set up and it looks ok!

Looks great. Which LUT were you using for the Slog3 to LC709 bit of your workflow? The official Sony one?

I'm about to use the LUT for the first time. Where do I download it?

I think I had grabbed them off of Alister Chapmans site but not sure. I'll see if I can locate a link.

Another option to try if you just want to see what the lut looks like or how it treats the footage is to use Sony's free Catalyst browse software. It has the luts built in.

Here's a small clip of a music video I shot with the FS7. Still working on the edit.

Information about cam/lens/grade on vimeo page.

Skin looks nice Sam for a 1 click deal.

I noticed the lips are very magenta looking (like he has lipstick) and the blue knobs seems really saturated. Is that how it really looks? Or could it be the WB magenta shift issue?

I would agree with your summary. But 4000ISO one has to have expectation management issues.

I didnt really evaluate his lips or knob(s) while were were shooting - we were just playing with rig configurations and i squeezed the record button. He is not usually a lipstick wearer to the best of my knowledge.

Tried 12000 ISO - seems noisy!

I shoot jobs weekly for small businesses (brokered through a national firm) that are "shoot in an hour and edit in an hour" jobs. No extra lighting. I usually take the HVX but took the FS7 today. I shot in Slog-3 and applied a LUT in post for the first time. I felt it turned out better than it would have with the HVX (due to low light capability) and I'm finally not seeing magenta.
