SHAME on you Sony!

How about a complimentary EVF for current s-log owners, the new one that clips on to the Sony F3? That would soothe my pissoffedness!

The loupe that pretends to be an EVF? That's so long your head will practically be back where the rear EVF puts it. I still want a loupe for my TVLogic 5.6" true HD monitor. :)

You opt into new technology to make money

You opt into new technology to make money

I didn't doubt they would lower the price eventually. But a 75% drop months after release is the most extreme example I've ever seen. I would have accepted a $500 drop but this guts the value of what we paid for.

When you are an early adopter, you do it to make money-ahead of anyone else in your market. So, if you spent $3700 on a feature that made you money over the period (granted a short period in which to recoup) then your investment is well made. However, if you bought early because you just thought it was essential to own, then you lost. Frankly, if you're shooting with S-log, you have higher end clients who appreciate that image difference and your rates should easily absorb the charges from Sony. Heck, you bought an F-3 to replace what?, an EX camera worth less than half the F-3, not to mention the new lenses you needed to get the better image from the F-3.

I spent $25K to own the first Alura lens for the F-3. Why?, because I would immediately get a superior image to anyone else using any other camera. I KNOW the price is inflated due to low availability, and WILL come down sometime. But in the meantime I'm making money from my INVESTMENT. And gaining new clients every month because of my new found abilities. Money well spent. Will I be pissed at Arri when they drop the price of that lens? nope.

I appreciate the logic of the argument, and for those who had S-Log a year or so its true. For those of us like Peter Johnson and I who had it a matter of weeks before the dropped 75% there was no real time to recoup the price.

Imagine the price of your lens dropped from $25k to $6k while you were still advising your clients of the benefits of the lens and justifying your increase in rates. Then they see the latest price and think you're gouging them. It really IS NOT GOOD.

With old clients a couple embarassed phone calls of explanation and a drop back in rates and they are okay. But as you noticed, stepping up from an EX1, new clients, new rates, new business aims. This was devastating to our business model and I think being pissed is entirely justified.

Here is Sony's latest qualification chart, and it still leaves me out in the cold.

Why are you going back and twlling your clients that the price of slog dropped. What do they care. Just charge for the camera what you think is fair. If they pay it, they feel they are getting a good deal. Noone is forcing them to give you business.

I didn't tell them the price of S-Log dropped. Clients don't live in a vacuum. They are often also camera people themselves. They discovered it themselves after I had told them I was increasing my rates because I now had an F3 with S-Log.

I finish a feature length movie tomorrow. I did a series a few weeks ago. I start another feature on Saturday. Those were booked before a cheaper S-Log was announced by Sony. I have nothing booked after the end of March.

Today was given a price of $1100 CDN for S-log upgrade from Sony dealer - not clear yet if it comes on a card or if the camera must be shipped to Sony....

In which case, how are they going to stop people from Europe ordering them online in the States or Canada for delivery anywhere?

Sony Europe needs to get their act together fast because they're starting to look stupid selling them for $3,800 as they still are today!

where did you get your quote from .
In montreal they are still trying to sell it to us at the non descent price (2 weaks ago)
CEV and SonoVideo

I got a quote from Sono Video in Mtl saying the S-log upgrade would be around 1100$.

Voici la nouvelle information concernant cette option auprès de Sony du Canada.

Sony of Canada Ltd. is pleased to announce a price decrease for the CBK-RGB01, 10 bit S-Log 4:2:2 and RGB 4:4:4 option for the PMW-F3 camcorder. This new pricing enables users to take advantage of this powerful functionality of 10 Bit S-Log and RGB 4:4:4 for the PMW-F3, unleashing the camcorder’s performance considerably, especially in combination with the SR-R1 SR master recorder.

Optional Firmware Upgrade for the PMW-F3 XDCAM EX 35mm Camcorder: This option offers a differentiation advantage, especially when used in conjunction with the Sony SR-R1 recorder.

This upgrade enables the following functions:

  • S-Log gamma
  • 3G-SDI output
  • Dual Link RGB444 video output
  • User LUTs
  • Pre-loaded LUTs
This new software upgrade option requires the installation of at least v1.10 operational firmware for the PMW-F3L/K. The PMW-F3L/K v1.10 firmware and newer releases is downloadable, along with instructions, from the Sony of Canada support website:

Le prix devrait se situer à environ 1,100$CAD

Hey Ned, do you (or anyone else out there) know what size and type of card it comes on? (pro card or the SxS-1)

If it's a 32 gig Pro, then the upgrade is kinda free... kinda.

When I bought it, it came on the 32gig SxS-1 card. I rationalized that with the price of that card it was only $3k instead of $3,800. OTOH, I have never used that card for anything. I only keep it incase I wanted to transfer S-Log to another camera.
