Serious Magic/HVX

The new beta version is out, as is an email to all registered beta testers. If you did not receive the notification with download instructions, please email me.

Mule: You, for one, apparently did not receive my email, at least not if I can believe the "permantent delivery failure" message. The e-dress I have for you is the same as you have in your profile on this forum, so I'm at a loss.

I intalled the beta about an hour ago, and I'm quite impressed. I was able to capture 720/60P on my Mobile Celeron 1.4GHz. There was a warning about the hard drive being too slow, but since it's a 7200RPM 100GB drive, I just ignored it, and I seem to have buttery-smooth video with no dropped frames.

The video (captured as AVI files, not MXF) drops right into the Edius Broadcast V4.01 timeline without using P2 Select.

Awww, a day too late.
I'm shooting a sports event in 720/50 today and am going to be card swapping to keep coverage. If I'd got the beta a day earlier I'd have been able to give it a good run!

Ah well.

I'll give it a good run through next week, I've got more non critical shooting planned next week.

How is the PAL support at the moment? Are there many other PAL beta testers?

Keep up the seriously magical good work!

I've just ordered my copy of the DV Rack and HDV Rack. Like David I hope the team at DV Rack had a way of removing the extra frames. I am living in Pal land and have my name down for a Cineporter I was wondering does this mean that I have to record in say 720 25P rather than 720 25PN if I want to use the DV Rack ?

Thanks Barry ! Can you still use the other features in DV rack for monitoring, vectorscope etc if you record to cineporter in PN ?

No, because when the HVX is in pN mode, no data goes out the firewire port.

If they someday update the HVX so that it outputs video data during pN mode, then yes you could probably do that. But with the HVX as it is (and likely will remain), no firewire data goes out the firewire port when in 24pN mode. Or 25pN or 30pN.

Will DV rack capture DVCProHD in QT format as well on a PC?
Yes, which is another reason I think it's awesome awesome awesome for FCP users. A MacBook Pro running BootCamp, capturing to DVC Rack, will store files that can be drag 'n' dropped onto the FCP timeline. No more "File->Import->Panasonic P2"!

Now, last time I tested this it wasn't working, so I'm assuming (oooh, there's that word again) that this will be properly implemented by the time a shipping version is available.

Tell you what, this is bad news for me. I guess the marked improvement in storage capacity with PN recording goes right out the window unless you want the P2 workflow.

Suppose I'll continue my relationship with the P2Store until Panasonic comes up with something better.

I'll be running the HVX next to a XDCamHD 350 in the field next week. So far, we've seen an additional two stops of latitude from the 200 versus the larger 1/2" 4:2:0 XDCam / HDV camera.

Stay tuned.

Barry I am not an editor so please excuse my lack of knowledge, but if I record in 720 25p to the cineporter to avail of the DV rack functions; Waveform etc and dub or copy this to a hard disk to farm out to an editor how easy/difficult is it for the editor to use remove the extra frames in say Avid or Final Cut. I am using Vegas 6 and am waiting for the Cineporter rather than buying P2's but I think I'm right in saying Vegas 6 and Cineform does this automaticaly, please correct me if I'm wrong.

And what would you say if I told you that DV Rack is smart enough to automatically drop the frames from 24P?

As the_other_mark just demonstrated, it'll be so easy that you won't even have to do it, because DVC Rack will automatically strip out the duplicate frames upon recording.

Hi there!

I just recived my beta DVC Rack, and every thing appears to be fine, I had only two problems till now:
1) the 78 feet Laird-Telemedia Fire wire cables (wich I have two) work well in 480i or pA but in 720 or 1080 (p, pA, i) no signal arrives to my laptop. ( DVC RAck say: no video device connected) I have been able to record 720 and 1080 via a shorter Zenith (8 feet firewire cable)

2) when I try to play the clip via WinMedia or Premiere Pro 2.0, it says that no codec is avaliable to play back, in fact the clip in premiere shows as audio clip without video, but inside DVC Rack it plays well.

Have any body answers to this?

Ernesto

PS : I'm sending this also to Serious magic beta support

another PS: will be a good idea to open a sticky for the DVC Rack

thanks

Okay, here's my question... what codec or format is DV Rack recording the HVX's output as? QT, AVI... or is it still even DVCPRO? What are the implications for editing real time and supported NLE's...

If it's NOT just standard DVCPRO and is a special codec then a cool trick would be to take HVX 1080p and instantly make full raster 1280 by 720 out of it like CineForm can...

That cable is much too long for 100Mbps Firewire use. For 25Mbps DV it will work, but you cannot have a cable that long for DVCPro50/HD or connecting a Firewire hard drive.

If you absolutely need to go that far, you may have to invest in a Firewire repeater.

You need a DVCPro50/HD codec and possibly DirectShow filter. Canopus Edius Broadcast V4.01 comes with a DVCPro50/HD codec, and I can drag-and-drop the AVI files from a Windows Explorer window directly into the timeline.

Ernesto: As THoff says, you'll need a DVCPro codec in order for your NLE to recognize the clips. We may make one available to our beta testers.

Jim: DV Rack records DVCPro content in your choice of AVI Type 1, AVI Type 2, Canopus, QuickTime, and a new QuickTime for Avid.
