7D sell the 5d ii for 2 7ds?

Hi guys,

Currently I have a 5d ii and a 7d but I may need another camera. So it leads me to think should I sell the 5d ii and buy two 7ds under canon loyalty program? What is the advantage of the 5d over 7d beside being able to shoot wide? Thanks

The 5DmkII is a full-frame sensor, as opposed to the 7D's APS-C crop sensor. If you move to the 7D, your lenses will be 100% compatible but you will lose some of your field of view. I'd also say that CF is a bit more robust, physically, than SDHC (smaller, easier to lose).

Of course, with the 7D you do gain 720p60 if you want to shoot slow-mo.

If still photography is your primary use, stay with the 5DmkII. If video is your focus, there are advantages to either camera.

The 7D also uses CF card. I'm focusing on video right now; jumping over from still photography. I aslo have my eyes on the 60D for its flip screen. How critical is full frame sensor in video..let's say for wedding?

for video, I'd sell the 7d and get two 550D

the 5D has:
* bigger sensor --> use your lenses as they're supposed to be used, get shallower DoF
* better colors
* higher noiseless ISO
* magic lantern (available on 5D2 and 550D, but not on 7D; coming soon for 60D)

so for weddings you get to use higher ISO values (1250 instead of 640), but will have a hard time focusing because of the shallower DoF (if you stop your lenses down to compensate for this, you lose all the ISO advantage)

on the other hand, for video, 7D and 550D are exactly the same, except:
* 7D has fullres HDMI out while recording and weather-sealed body
* 550D has magic lantern
so for me 550D is a better camera, even without taking into account that the price is about 1/2

I don't believe that is entirely accurate. I have never read or seen mentioned that the 5d resolves better color detail. Secondly the 7D has advantages over the T2i in photography and video.

A hack on a camera to me can not be considered as it is not 100% reliable. Furthermore the 7D is a weather sealed camera + more professional built. The weight alone saves you from many micro jitters than can happen on a smaller t2i when going hand held. A bettery grip on a t2 makes it a better camera.

Now to reply to the op, I personally would not sell a 5d for a 7d. The ONLY advantage I can think of is slow motion and for that just pick up a cheap t2i for less than $600 for those special moments.

5d with it's full frame and high iso recording in my opinion creates a beautiful image that I would not trade for almost any camera less than $5K

How is the 60D compare to T2i? It's now come down to these 2 cameras if I decide to sell either the 7D or 5D or both.

Why not look into the t3i, it has a swivel screen, manual audio, and is a little beefier than the t2i. It even has the crop mode which is awesome to have. You can still throw a battery grip on it, to give it a bigger better feel.

I'd also suggest selling the 7D rather than the 5D, and perhaps getting one each of the 550D and 60D. That way you'll have three cams that all have Magic Lantern available if you choose to use it. You'll get the full frame benefits when you need them, and have the flexibility of having options.

With 3x 7D's you'd miss out on several options including swivel screen, full-frame, Magic Lantern, SD cards (cheaper than CF), etc which you can get from other models. Since the APS-C cams all shoot identical quality, you may as well cover as many options as possiblbe by having a several differenct models, espescially since you know they will still cut perfectly together.

The downsides of this option would be the 550D uses a different battery to the 5DmkII, 7D and 60D. You'd also lose the HD monitoring of the 7D and the weather sealing.

Stay with the 5D and GET a 7D as 2nd cam.

5D better with tonal gradation especially skin tones, better in low light, wider FOV.

7D, better hd monitoring that the other canons cant give, and 60P. -though you should try to avoid this if the purpose is just slowdown to 80 percent speed as the 720 gives a degraded
image compared with 1080 as far as these cameras go.

For just slight slow down 30P on both 5D and 7D are adequate when conformed to 24P with slight nudge down to 85-80 % speed.
For short effect shots use 60P sparingly.

Color aliasing is also minimal on the full frame sensor of 5D compared with the 7D on our res chart tests and this is crucial with landscapes and wide angle building shots.

Im currently shooting a Mall commercial for digital cinema screening and the 5D and 7D are our workhorse.

Were in pre prod for a fast craft transport commercial an the 5D/7D tandem will also be in use.

So, yeah, these 2 cams are our preferred arsenal for our current projects.

Ted, I beleive this is exactly the setup the OP currently has. However, he says he needs a 3rd camera.

Darn... I should get new contact lenses.. thanks for that..sigh.

In that case I agree with your suggestion. IF HE REALLY NEEDS TO NOW, then he should keep the 5D and do as you suggest.

I have a 5dII and have thought selling and get a 7D. The reason I want to is 60FPS, full 1080 on HDMI out and when I shoot weddings at low light I could shoot at say 1.8 so I could let lots of light in and have a easier DOF to deal with focusing.

On the 5D it is really hard to shoot at 1.8 and keep things in focus. I usually have to go to 2.8. (moving things of course)

The reason I have not changed is because I think the footage looks better overall on the 5d and I shoot photography.

I don't believe that is entirely accurate. I have never read or seen mentioned that the 5d resolves better color detail.

look at the zacuto shootout 2010 and in many places in shane hurlbut's blog
(in any case, it's not "color detail" but "better colors")

plus, I don't feel that ML makes any difference in terms of reliability on my 550D; I've experienced some glitches, but they've always been very minor things (worst case: get some startup problem; turn camera off, then on, everything is ok)

about the light sensitivity and DoF thing: if you don't want to crush your DoF, I think 5D2 and 7D/60D/600D/550D are all the same in this respect: a 30mm at f/1.8 on APS-C will give you the same FoV and DoF of a 50mm f/2.8 on FF, so you have a bit over one stop more light hitting the APS-C sensor... but then it's a smaller sensorl, and will show noise at lower ISO settings, and that equates things:
* 30mm at f/1.8 on APS-C at ISO 640
* 50mm f/2.8 on FF at ISO 1250
will deliver very, very, very, very similar images

Thanks everyone for your responses. From this thread I learned that the 7D output full HDMI and a little more about the 5D video capability. I'll give it a few days before I make up my mind.
