GH4 Secret Appearance of the GH4 at SXSW Tomorrow

I can't wait to see a side by side comparo of GH4 in alleged 10Bit 4:2:2 for use in Chroma Key. Alleged vs dithered that is ;)

Why? I mean, I really don't want the YAGH for most of my work, but it would be nice to have a small external recorder to get 10 bit 4:2:2. So what makes you say I should want the YAGH?

The first reason is you want to record 10-bit immediately, and as of the lack of HDMI 4K recorders it's the only way at the moment.

I am not trying to sound coy, but I can't say the second reason right now. As it will work with another yet to be announced product. You can always buy a YAGH later, if the need arises- I think it the unannounced product makes for compelling functionality.

Can odyssey 7Q record the 4k 10 bit from the hdmi?

No it can't, an no firmware upgrade can ever change that in the 7Q.

I love the 7Q, it is a highly capable and can record 4K from dual 3G SDI, and there more than 1-way convert 4K HDMI to dual 3G, but none as simple for the GH4 as the YAGH.

Can't wait to see the footage from the shootout!

Any idea if you can monitor the recording live on a smartphone?

I can confirm that you CAN monitor live footage on an Android phone. There is very low latency as well (excellent). You can also access the thumbnails of everything on the card. You can download Lumix Link right now from the Google Play store for free. I expect it to work with your GH4 when it ships.

Things to note, at least as of now with the Smartphone image is small and as far as I can tell you only have the option of a window on your phone, rather than the full screen. Also, there are a few Lumix Link bugs with this pre-release GH4 (although I'm hardly surprised at only version 0.3 of the firmware). Lumix Link works with the GH3 now, and I think it will be a popular item for the GH4.

Do you think the black magic hdmi to SDI converter will allow the 7Q to record 4k 10bit from the GH4 hdmi connection?

You sir are on FIRE!

Since the YAGH requires power and does not support batteries is it possible to use a brick and adapter? What would be the preferred powering solution if you cant plug it in the wall?

Illya thanks for keeping us posted with hands on facts. I can't wait to see your shootout even just good test footage from the GH4 solo would be really nice to see. Having a GH3 already the GH4 is a no brainer for what it offers.

This is it. A lot would pay $2,000 for a recording solution with XLR audio/nice preamps included. This should have been the YAG unit design to add more value.
Like a Sound Devices Pix 2__ with better screen and 4Kapability? Based on their pricing at least, $2K would likely be an underestimate.

True, but you could eliminate the screen. And, given how fast this space is changing, one could make the case that the Pix units look overpriced at $2,000+ as well. But your point is well taken.

Incredible! A few follow up questions:

1) Can you control start/stop recording via the Lumix Link app?
2) Does the app show the camera settings while you're recording?
3) Does it show focus peaking, audio levels, etc., or is it just the video?
4) Does the info shown on the Lumix Link app screen disappear like it does on the GH3 screen after 30 seconds?

Thanks again!

1) Maybe? There is a button to do this, but didn't work. I assume only because of the version camera/software I have.
2) Not that I can tell
3) Looks like just video, but I remember some discussion of advanced controls being available at a development meeting, so I think that is coming.
4) Haven't used this with the GH3 so I can't comment. But I've attached a pic of the main screen (taken with the GH4 while tapping the shutter release button.)

Je pense que la société ATOMOS fera une mise à jour payante ou non de leur enregistreur ninja et samurai en 4K 422 10 BITS .
Quand pensez vous ?

This is what I also think they will do with the Blade serie. They have to. The Convergent Design business model with on-demand codecs has a lot of respect from the community and everybody wants them to add more and more camera-compatible codecs to their 7 and 7Q. I believe that BlackMagic will also introduce a new Hyperdeck Shuttle 4K, or some sort of competing product to CD and Atomos with a screen monitor for NAB...and it will ship next year:)

Not related to the previous question but Im thinking that the YAGH get's its 10bit 4K 422 Output via the regular GH4 HDMI output. Vision wise, the YAGH is just an HDMI to SDI converter? What the SDI outputs can do is completely dependent on the HDMI output of the camera.

There are also two sets of connectors on the top of the YAGH/bottom of the camera. The camera could be using those in addition to the HDMI port to transfer the stream to the YAGH. If so, will we ever see an alternate way to get 10-bit 4K out to a recorder, short of something licensed by Panasonic (and thus probably just as pricey as the YAGH)? Doubt it.

The 18pin connector on the bottom of the camera is for the regular battery grip as per the GH3. The other additional connector on the YAGH is only 4 pins other than the HDMI connector. I think these pins might be for the XLR inputs and Timecode. Very unlikely the four pins would carry any additional image information but I'm no Panasonic engineer. If I am correct, then it could be very easy to create an aftermarket battery grip like the current photo only grip, that only contained a battery and the HDMI to SDI interfaces if you didn't need the XLR inputs. This could be created quite cheaply.

Any Chinese aftermarket manufacturers reading this?

saying that, the GH4 and YAGH is a cheap combination for what you are getting. I just hate the form factor. Even a breakout cable with a tethered breakout box would have been better than the YAGH.

My theory is that the GH4 was probably the real goal all along, and the GH3 was a stopgap/intermediary product along the way. So it wouldn't surprise me if those 18 pins will do more than power, shutter, two dials, three buttons on top... it doesn't seem like a simple battery grip would really need 18 pins' worth of connectivity. Hopefully I'm wrong though! It would be nice to see alternatives to the YYAARRGGHHH MATEY box.
