If I had 5 trillion dollars I think I would try to stop world hunger first, but then later I would build a camera and I would do it with style and modesty. Less talkin, more doin.

The best thing you can do is actually just shoot with whatever you have access to.

A completed movie/whatever with a DVX100 or a XL1s is alot better then a unfinished movie with RED One or a Sony F950.

And a completed project is alot better then a not even started project.

Today I wrote 40 pages in one go. It was nuts.

Will shoot a feature this summer and will send a link when its ready :-)

And I will add that a half baked idea not finished project, as long as you have some cool 3D renders to show off with, is WAY better than a complete project.

A complete project requires production, shipping, charging credit cards, taking back defected products.......

What would you prefer? A cult of followers and no product or no cult AND no product, or both cult AND a ready product that must live to the massive expectations?

Of course cult and no product....

"like duhhhhh....."

Jannard just bought a 20 million dollar mansion for guests of Red. There's no way your invited. :-)

I dunno, when it comes to questions like that, I think I'd trust the billionaire entrepreneur who's revolutionized two industries so far, over the guy who sits on the sidelines taking potshots at him over the internet.

I will wait for the AF-100 at least we know that is coming.

We know the Scarlet's coming too. The AF-100 has probably been in development just as long as Scarlet has, RED is just more open with their progress to their target market.

I don't know why, but there's nothing really too special about the AF-100. It seems like its just a GH1 in an HVX200 body. Maybe once we see some footage I might have a change of heart though.

Agreed. By the way, doesn't he still have an account on DVXUSER? Obviously Jarred Land is on here too.

I know that you all think I'm crazy, but I always felt (=knew) that for Jannard Red is not about bringing 4K cameras to the masses. Its about name dropping, its about hanging out with actresses, its about schmoozing with A-list actors and directors.

Which is cool... I don't mind. That's why 90% of the people get into show biz anyway... and I know, I'v been to Cannes a few times. Its all about the parties and who you get to F#$@. I know this producer who bring his three girlfriends with him each year, and then they all need to stay in different hotels... complicated logistics. Good thing he is a producer so he can manage it. There are MUCH easier ways to make money than being a producer or start a company like Red. It's not about the money. And it's not about the art :-) that goes without saying.

but never mind, that's another discussion.

And really, its all in good spirit, just wanted to fool around. I can't make these jokes to anybody who isn't part of this small community.

Absolutely!!!
I think now that the Red One has a firm place in the industry, DSLRs have become the new underdogs and everybody roots for the underdogs. But we have to remember when it comes to the acutal companies behind the product it's not RED One cameras vs the 5D or 7D or GH1. It's Red Digital Cinema, a relatively small startup company that REVOLUTIONIZED mainstream cinema with their FIRST product VS GIANT corporations like Canon and Panasonic AND even the medium of FILM itself. If it wasn't for Jannard putting his ass on the line, we wouldn't be enjoying this embarrassment of cinematography riches IMHO. Like him or not, like the Red One or not, he at least deserves a crap-ton load of respect!
And honestly I don't care WHY he does it as long as he keeps doing it!!!

I agree. Just too bad that all the name dropping, "announcements" about nothing, banning people from the forum, canceling Scarlet FF35 (not to cannibalize on Epic, which is exactly what those "giant corporations" would do) ruined the experience for me. Especially that post about only looking for fanboys as beta testers, which was unintelligent.

.

I think if you have a billion dollars, you hardly need the technical headache of developing a cine camera in order to shmooze with industry types. With those kinds of deep pockets, I guarantee he is on the short list of every "A" party in town. Everyone is looking for funding. And of course with that kind of money, there is no shortage of Hollywood whores if he were into that kind of thing. Buying his 20 million dollar Red guest house mansion is more than likely part of his 4k lobbying effort with industry types ... and fun parties.

I do think he has a genuine passion for the technology. But I take your ribbing in the spirit it was intended.

and, he told you this personally, I'm sure...

I'm sure he could do that without spending tens or hundreds of million dollars starting an entirely new camera company in an extremely competitive market...

this is the stuff that gets me... make a completely random statement that presumes to know with certainty the motivations of a man that you do not know personally or professionally. This is just silly. Or, maybe I don't have my sarcasm meter on or something...

Alright, I'm going to have to call for a link on this one...

Because, I've not seen the first bit of news from RED that the FF35 Scarlet was cancelled. I don't keep up with it as closely as some, but I'm fairly in the loop on the latest news, and the only thing I have seen was a rumor thread that was started which people ran with (which happens all the time), calculating all the reasons why they believed it to be so.... But, as far as actual news... FF35 DSMC brains are all Monstro Sensors, which is next generation after the MX sensors. They have RED One upgrades to MX sensor right now. There is a lot between MX sensor upgrades for existing R1 owners, and a 3rd generation sensor that will go in the FF35 brains...

That's just plain insulting. You don't have ANY knowledge whatsoever of what Jim Jannard is like, you have no insight into his motivations, and you certainly aren't giving him any credit whatsoever for his workaholic work ethic. Unlike you, I do know a little about it, since my business partner is Jim's right hand man, and I've heard tell of the all-night late night around-the-clock work sessions.

Jim is passionate, extremely hard working, and dedicated.

For you to cast aspersions on his character here is low, it's ridiculous, and it's also the last straw.

Find something else to talk about, or go somewhere else. Your one-man campaign against that company and its products is now over as far as this forum is concerned.

There's supposedly footage coming next Saturday from a prototype Scarlet 2/3" - for all those who haven't been keeping up with the Recon posts.

In terms of slating Jannard, you have to look at it this way: why would someone who has already achieved so much in their life in terms of wealth, accomplishment and experiencing much of the finer things that this life has to offer; decide to create a whole new company from scratch and endure what I can only imagine is months of headaches, meticulous planning and a whole heap of your precious time (for, lets face it, a drop in the ocean of money, given his current wealth) for anything but the sheer fact that they are completely dedicated to their true passion - film making.

As far as I am concerned, what Jannard has done for film making could be seen as a philanthropic act; he's giving to the masses quality that he has come to expect but that wasn't delivered. He's seen that the technology could leap frog many generations of product updates and still be made at a price that most professional film makers would deem economical, with a quality and brand image (this is a key point - I already hear people saying "We're shooting on a RED" rather than "We're shooting on a Sony/Canon/ARRI" - they're just film cameras.).
