scarlet fixed 120 fps footage at ru. prores

The more I see, the more I like it.

This is the longest clip I've seen so far coming from Scarlet. Thanks for posting!!!!

Ahhh.... September. September...

Amazing stuff.
I wonder what will be the final price,
and when will the 'common people' be
able to order one.
probably around 2012.

I've been following this quite a bit. I like the fact that Red isn't talking much anymore, and just quietly working. But here's what I can tell.

There are several working models out there. Not just prototypes that Ted carries around. Several people have a working unit they are testing.

It's highly likely the prototype is in actual production beyond just one-off's. Here's an actual photo from the Scarlet site:

They noted they were hit hard by the Japan quake, but are slowly catching up. So this photo is a good sign. There still seems to be some firmware questions. Jarred was posting two weeks ago about recent tweaks in 120fps overcranking. As in, it's finally stable. At least that's the impression I got.

If I were to make a guess, it would be that they'll ship possibly by September. Though knowing Red, it could take longer. I wouldn't be surprised though if they bump the price for a 2/3" fixed, with CF, with monitor and battery, to $6500. Maybe more. I also won't be surprised if the first 1000 of them or so go to current Red owners, and that takes at least a month for production to catch up.

Of course, who knows. It wouldn't shock me if they take until next spring to ship en masse.

Japan is the earthquake fault at all - which still need to finish, comes to finally have a salable scarlet

Honest question: who is gonna buy it? Really, there are a lot of options out there... a lot! Who is still living in a 2/3 world? It seems that the EPIC-S would be the thing, am I wrong?

Epic-S will be double the price, sans lens. But for pros, and those willing to save, I agree with you.

I think that Scarlet will still have some appeal, especially to docs and indies. HDR, 120-180fps overcranking, 3k (more like 2.5k, but still...), RAW option. I don't mind a fixed lens if it's good, and I don't mind the limited zoom range if the quality is good at both ends. I also don't mind 2/3" chip, if the lens is fast enough.

Problem may be time and cost. We're already seeing HDR in consumer still cameras. Big chips are very popular. Eventually we'll see faster overcranking in cameras this price, people may rarely use RAW, etc. And something more pragmatic will come along by one of the big boys. This is why more delays, and a potential price bump, could be very detrimental to Scarlet's sales.

At least that's how I see it.

You know I am gonna seriously consider the Scarlet. What snowleopard said - for the kind of stuff I do - autofocus is a dream. 3K is plenty. RAW is awesome. Easier to control DOF. Fast frame rates - gush.Vincent Laforette said on his blog that the one down side of an Epic is the sheer amount of data. Plan to upgrade your data storage and backup setup. I mean we are talking insane file sizes at max quality. Good luck editing 5 K with a good old workstation as well. Plan to upgrade your workstation with a rocket or two. So Scarlet seems great to me. Just need to see more high res challenging setups. The low light seems to point to a small struggle with noise. At least from the lion shot I saw.

I'm afraid I lost patience with them last year. I've waited since 2008 and figure it will be 2012-2013 before mere mortals can get their hands on one.

I picked up a Sony F3. S35 sensor, low-low noise, easy work flow, upgradable to 4.4.4 S-Log if you need it, 60p from SDI, etc.

Three years from now I'll look again. In the mean time I have a super cam. :)
