Scarlet Announcement

They need to ship Scarlet before the likes of the AF100, 5DIII, Sony s35, Drama, Ikon etc start to drop or just bury it and concentrate on the high end products.
Based on the latest announcement, that is likely not going to happen, at least as far as the AF100 is concerned (the only one on your list that has a defined shipping date of 2010, IINM). Scarlet's manufacturing partner isn't going to be able to do the work, so Red has to start looking for another manufacturer, plus delays in fixing a bug in Epic mean delays for Scarlet, as Scarlet progress is dependent on Epic.

My SELF INDUCED waiting and expectations for that company are forever thrown out the window.
Well, you can of course feel how you want about it, but do recognize that Jim has vowed that nothing will stop him from delivering on everything he has said he would do.

Nothing else in this message applies to Chip or any individual; it's just general observations on how Scarlet and Red have progressed and been talked about here on the forum...

Obviously losing foxconn is a huge deal, and he said as much. He's letting people know, right now, that there will be more delays, which stinks, but at least it's admirable that he's giving us the bad news up front. I mean, he's volunteering negative issues about his own company; that isn't done very frequently.

I pine for a Scarlet S35. But I'm not waiting for one. If it is released someday, I will then evaluate it on its own merits, free from any hype or marketing embellishments, and see how it compares to my current arsenal. If it's better, and the cost to get into it is reasonable, I will gladly get it, and sell off my existing cameras to fund it if necessary.

Just because you buy and use one product, doesn't mean you're forever abandoning the idea of using another! Sometimes it seems like folks here view buying a camcorder with the same gravity as getting married. It isn't. Buy it, use it, if you don't like it then sell it on ebay and move on to the next product that you think would serve your purposes better.

In the meantime, I can't imagine what valid purpose it could serve to badmouth, namecall, denigrate, complain, or otherwise even talk about Scarlet. At one point, talking about it was very helpful -- we helped the company learn what it was that we wanted it to do. And, by extension, we helped the rest of the manufacturers out there learn what we wanted too! But at this point, Red knows everything we could possibly want them to know. They've seen how the market has shifted. The ball is in their court, and they have issues to deal with to make it happen, whenever they might be able to make it happen, or even if they might be able to make it happen.

What possible purpose could it serve to kick them while they're down? That company has never done anything to hurt any of us; all they've done is introduce a digi-cine camera that stood the industry on its head and has led to products like the AF100 being announced.

The truth of the matter is: Scarlet either will or won't be released. It either will or won't do what you want. It either will or won't cost what you want. It either will or won't be competitive with what the other manufacturers release. So? Wait and see what it is, whenever it ever comes out, and evaluate it then. Until then, it's just speculation and wasted energy, energy that could be better put to use shooting your own film. Or mopping the floor, for that matter, because at least at the end of it, you'd have a clean floor!

It's Reds own SELF INDUCED media hype that put them in this position, you don't see Panny or Canon doing this for a reason and honestly I'm glad they don't, you lose integrity each time you make excuses to your potential customers.

Anyway, I'm sure Jim will do what he says he will but time is of the essence. I know a little about what it takes to tool a manufacturing plant.

Now, I'd be surprised if Scarlet ever makes it to market, I mean come on, how much of an impact will it have in 18 months when DSLR's will be recording raw and cost $1500?

I am glad to hear Jim's ok and his health related issues have now ALL been resolved.

Are you kidding? When the AF100 was announced at NAB I saw a few interviews of Panny representatives taking jabs at RED. And Canon does it all the time in their own little ways.

Its a competitive market, and if you can't take a little bit of banter between companies than you probably shouldn't listen to it.

I'm going to come back and revisit this quote 1.5 years from now.

I'm betting that there won't be raw video recording on ANY DSLR for $1500 then.

If it was easy it would have been done by now by someone other than RED.

RAW video is fantastic, and even more so when RED came out with their version of it when they did.

I had no idea of the banter between them because I DON'T listen to it, thanks. I was referring to what Red has said in the past directly to it's customers.

Panny and Canon should be throwing more jabs, they deliver what they say they will and have the integrity to back it up. If the AF100 wasn't 100% coming to market when they say it will they wouldn't be telling you it will. Integrity.

Um....you guys....ChipG is telling the truth. I've said it over and over but...um...Red talks too much. I am rooting for them all the way.....but they should (or should of) keep everything under the lid until the time was right.

Well, in their defense, that has indeed proven to be a two-edged sword. It served them very well in the early days (and even today -- who hasn't heard of the Scarlet? EVERYONE knows about the Scarlet!)

But yeah, it's also caused them to wear out their welcome with some folks. And, I think they know that talking too much hasn't been the best course of action in all cases; Jim made a post saying something on the order of "that's how we used to do it, but from now on we're playing our cards closer to our chest."

In any case, it's pretty likely that we won't be hearing much about the Scarlet from them for a while, as they sort out the Epic issues and find a new manufacturing partner.

Everything will be forgotten once they will be delivering :-)

Some would call it twist, others beat. Jim knows very well he doesn't have product to deliver for now, so the game goes on. Just a different tagline.

They need to sell the Epic first.

there are a small number of tattoo cameras... originally it was going to be a couple hundred, but it got scaled down to a more manageable 20 or something like it... at least that was last info...

So, yes... there are tattoo camera's "out in the wild" being used on a daily basis... Perhaps that is how they discovered the bug :)

later,
Jason

There have been so many iterations. Yes, there was a FF35 planned. But at this point in time it appears there will only be a 2/3" Scarlet. I can't even tell if it's going to be two versions, one with fixed lens, and one without. It seems also the lens specs has changed on Scarlet, at least to something better. And they have some slick new autofocus they are hinting at. Right now, there is only one Scarlet spec listed on their site, which dates to Nov 30. Here is the info and specs.
:lipsrseal

The RED page from Nov 30 clearly gives prices for the 2/3" Scarlet 8X Fixed kit, Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable Brain and Scarlet S35 Brain. What facts make you say "it appears" and "can't even tell"?
