According to the RED leader November 3 is going to be the biggest day in RED history. I learned a new acronym over at RED user today: POPP or "personal ownership price point"
What would Scarlet have to bring to the table at your POPP to abandon your beloved AF100?
Super 35mm sensor - actually I could live with HD or 2k resolution
HDR, good fixed zoom and a package that enables you to shoot right out of the box, without spending a fortune on drives, cards and whatnot just to get it working.
And yeah, a POPP in the neighborhood of 6000 Euros.
And RED leader has also pointed out to wild speculation being rampant on Reduser and if it continues, people will be dissappointed although the specs will still blow everything out of the water. Well, based on original specs, I would think this to be true. But another CMOS sensor which most probably will be at base price 2/3 size, with rolling shutter but higher resolution, compressed raw, and 3k. Great specs, but I'm going to go with the Ikonoskop, 95% made up my decision. I've already got my preliminary order ready but the euro is gone sky high this past week. I think IMO the kodak ccd @24-60fps eventually and uncompressed raw in CDNG as well as filmish look, might outweigh the 3k cmos that delivers a bit of slomo in fps and looks more to me like a 5dmkII on steroids, at least in terms of its digital image.
I'm really enjoying shooting with my AF100. Looking closely at Canon and Red's Announcement. If either releases a 4k camera (4k recorded format) with a S35 I'd consider it greatly. If it is 1080P then I'll pass for now. In my line of work in the event field, the AF100 is working very nicely and exceeds my expectations coming from a DSLR. I love the over-cranking up to 60P. I've fallen in love with Slow-motion again as I use it for certain shots. 4K acquisition is the next step for me all for under $8K
Red wont come out with a HD camera. Its not in their DNA. I'm guessing 3K minimum for new Scarlet. You kind of got to think the 2/3 chip is over. S35 seems like the new standard now. We shall see. Good times. Oh, and I checked. My AF-100 will still work after November 3rd but only with cinema lenses. Darn it!
I'm good with the AF-100 right now. I followed the Scarlet thread since the beginning. I'm not interested in the 2/3 fixed or with their mini-primes. I am interested in the S35 and would consider one in a year or so if it came in around $10 - 12K for the body which I think is about what they are going to ask. When they first announced a 35 scarlet it was around $8K. Still, I think it could land around $16K with minimum accessories and I would prefer it to say an F3. I'm glad I have the AF-100. As soon as it came out, I said "that's for me." I'd still be waiting, otherwise... or renting EX-1's with adapters
The big announcement is everybody missed my birthday on Nov 2nd.
I'm sorry, but my next camera will not be a Scarlet unless it is a Digital 5K Oatmeal Box Pinhole Camera.
There is just something about shooting without a lens I dig.
