[WTB] Scammer alert!!

Hello:

I just wanted to pass along a situation that I just went through while buying a HPX170 from a person on Ebay. I went through the usually procedure of bidding on a camera from a person selling the camera from Houston, Texas. I saw that he had 613 transactions and 100% feedback. I went through PayPal to pay for the camera and received a tracking number for the purchase. But, when I received the tracking information from the USPS I found out that package was being delivered from Brazil. I'm thinking what the hell. So, I just said to myself "I guess its ok as long as the camera is not damaged". So as I'm waiting for the package I see that its taking a long time for it to get from Brazil. So, I notice that he shipped it first class instead of Priority or some other higher level shipping service. Oh by the way...he charged me $40.00 shipping. So I just keep my fingers crossed and hoped for the best. A week later I see that it arrives at my local post office on Saturday. So, I wait and wait for the package to be delivered. Still no package. I'm thinking that since it needed to be signed for (because they sent it registered mail) that maybe I just missed the mail carrier. Later that evening I look at the tracking process on-line and notice that the package was delivered. What the hell!!
I call the post office on Monday and ask where the package is at. They say that it was delivered and I say no it wasn't. A least not to me. So, after phone call after phone call to the post office and emails back and forth to the seller assuring me that he sent it to the correct address. I ask the seller "did you purchase insurance on the package and he says "no...they don't offer insurance on international packages. BULLS##T! After talking with the post office I ask well "who signed for the package" they say "We can't read the signature. Oh Great! I tell them to fax me the signed label so I can see it for myself. I get the fax and deduct that the package was delivered to a local plumbing supply store. I'm thinking "how the hell did it get over there?" but I don't care at this point and just want my camera. So, I go to the store and find that they have a very small box with a 8gb jump drive inside. VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Well, at this point I am getting even more suspicious about this whole transaction.
I do some research on-line and read about how scammers list a product on Ebay collect the money, ship a decoy package with a tracking number on it (thinking that your package is in transit) and never gets delivered because they find a business on-line near you and have it shipped there. I don't know at this point whether it was the seller that pulled the fast one or it was intercepted somewhere between Brazil and my address. I am having PayPal do an investigation into the transaction and hopefully I can get my money back.

Sorry for the long winded post but I thought that I needed to pass this new scam along to other DVX members as well as cry on someone else's shoulder. Unfortunately, you can't trust people anymore. I thought that I did my research by looking at the sellers past comments and number of sales.

Ebayers earn feedback from purchases as well as sales. Could be he has bought a lot of things. Also, sometimes buyers set up more than one account in order to puff up positive feedback.

But this is an open-and-shut case for Ebay in three ways. Firstly, he didn't send it from where he said he would. Secondly, he didn't send it to the correct address. Thirdly, the item is significantly not as described. Any one of these alone is enough for a full reimbursement including shipping.

Not just eBay protection, but PayPal too. If you're in good PayPal standing, it should be easy to get your money back just through PayPal. If the seller disputes it, the money might be in escrow for up to a month as PayPal reviews each side of the story, but PayPal / eBay really favor buyers more than sellers. (This wasn't the case 12 years ago when I almost got scammed twice while trying to buy a used DVD player off eBay & eBay was no help at all.)

eBay owns PayPal. Whatever "protection" you get is, ultimately, from eBay. As an added layer of protection, I always keep my PayPal account with a $0.00 balance and route my PayPal purchase to my credit card for eBay purchases. AmEx, Visa and MasterCard all offer their own buyer protection and will side with the card holder against PayPal in a disputed transaction.

Paypal's policy is that insurance is for the seller, not the buyer. If the product is signifigantly different than what you ordered you will be refunded. You can open a claim with them directly and I am sure you have nothing to worry about in this situation.

One thing, to be aware of is that many pseudo scammers, use this type of transaction to create cashflow for their businesses. How it works is this, you buy a big ticket item, for whatever reason the product is delayed. You eventually contact Paypal to open a dispute. Eventually the seller says how terrible sorry that it all went so wrong due to no fault of his own and refunds the money. The buyer feels, "Gee, what a decent guy" and then gives him positive feedback to boot. What they don't realize is that the seller just got a large chunk of money as an interest free loan to tide him over a short period of time.

i have bought alot of big ticket items and feel out the sellers as well .camera guys always have website with the name ,company ,and pic on it. if not it probably not lajit . scammers are getting smarter . keep us updated with ebays response , ebay better cough it up.

Sorry for what happened. Once I almost got scammed at another photography related website. The scammer shipped a package and offered tracking number, but before the package arrived my local UPS location, he recalled the package back through the UPS. He must thought that he got me with that trick. I called my credit card and filed a paypal claim right away. With the tracking information telling the obvious story, I got my money back without much trouble.

So just like someone already mentioned above, always use a credit card with your paypal payment. No balance or from your bank account.

I'll post more when I'm at my pc
what I tend to do is when receiving or shipping items
i pull out my iPhone n record everything from the time the guy arrives to deliver the package
