C300: SanDisk Extreme C.F. Cards

My budget is around $300

2x - SanDisk Extreme 64GB (60MB/s) -- $405
2x - SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (160MB/s, UDMA 7) - $270
3x - SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (160MB/s, UDMA 7) - $405**

**IF two 32GB cards are not enough

Is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB card overkill for the C300?
What about the 64GB cards instead?
--> This is for the best recording results and slow motion.

For a whole day of doc shooting, if I have only two 32GB card (160min total) is that enough?
If it's not, then I'd need to get one more 32GB card (240min total) or the 2x 64GB cards (320min total).

What would be the best option?

I use Sandisk Extreme 32GB cards most of the time (not the Extreme Pro versions). They work perfect for all resolutions, frame rates, and settings. It's not uncommon for me to fill four 32GB cards in a day of doc-style shooting.

Okay. Thanks.
Id like to get the non-pro ones if they work well, which you say they do, but they are discontinued and I cant find them anywhere at a good price.
B&H doesn't sell them anymore.

So, Ill probably the 64GB non-pro cards

I have 6 hoodman 32 gb cards and 6 sandisk cards behind that. I have shot all six hood mans in a day of documentary shooting, which I really don't want to do very often if you know what I mean .

Beware that for some reason Canon only cites the 32GB SanDisk Extreme cards as being fully compatible with all framerates/datarates/resolutions, not the 64 GB Extreme's - for higher capacity cards they say you need the pro versions, see:

http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/misc/cinemaEOS_faq.shtml - CF card related questions; there is a table with compatible cards there. This meant that the 32 GB extreme was the best bang for the buck, and I have 5 of them myself.

However, this info does not appear to have been updated since the camera came out, and now SanDisk has upgraded their Extreme line - a faster-than-before (120mb/s) 32 GB Extreme costs about 75$ on B&H, and I would be very surprised if those don't breeze through anything the C300 throws at them.

That being said, a faster, more expensive card might come in handy with any future cameras, and especially if you ever use a Magic Lantern RAWed DSLR as a B-cam... And in the extremely unlikely event that Canon open the C300 up to larger data-rates and that 1080p slow motion everybody's crying out for, then you would be ready to roll.

Ah, good point! I never noticed that

Ah yes, that too. I havent noticed these either. These do look like the best buy at the moment. Unless if the C300 will accept the newer 64GB version.
*BUT, looking at it more carefully, its 120MB/s read speed. Not write speed. Write speed is still at 60MB/s. The Pro are around 150. So, I dont know how much that'll effect it, if at all.

Just out of interest I tried a Komputerbay 64gb CF 1000x 150MB/s extreme speed card in my C300 but it would not work, camera just did not like the card.

I have been using the lexar 800x 32gbs and 64gbs with my c300s since the camera first came out. no issues

Steve,
I have one 128 GB Komputerbay 1000x card. I then tried it in my DSLR (Canon 1D Mark IV ) and it worked. I found that for some weird reason the card was showing near to full. So I formatted that card in the 1D Mark IV and then it worked. Then I again placed it in the C300 and I could initialise it. Now it works fine with the C300. I sent a mail to Komputerbay informing these things, but those guys started asking me about the file structure and such in C300 etc etc. Some details which I am not aware. Anyway, the morale of the story is, the Komputerbay cards have their own quirks. Don't evaluate anything taking the Komputerbay as the standard.

Michael,
I have tons of cards. 16GBs, 32 GBs, 64 GBs and 128 Gb in UDMA7. With the C300, 60MB/s is fine. Ofcourse, I won't say that any higher spec is a waste if purely used for C300, because the speed of copying from the card to your comp is better with the faster cards. These days I am going for the faster 1000x cards so that when using mixed shooting with C300 and 1D C, I can use those cards in the 1D C as well. So if you have any plans of shooting with 1DC, then you may have those cards as well.

I was tracking my memory card usage over the years. I realised that I have donated most of the lower spec memory cards. Other lower spec cards find use in my sound devices SD 702T as well as back up DSLRs. With Arri Amira using CFast 2.0, it seems other cameras will also start moving towards CFast 2.0 and then we have to spend money to buy another bunch of cards. :(
