update...I converted my test files with Samsung movie converter and I got better results in terms of details than iffmpeg. Maybe I messed something with the latter.

Hi Ed, can you please let us know which lens you used for the tests and if you had image stabilization turned on or off?
Thank you for the info!leica r 50mm f/1.4 lens. no image stablization.
Wait, this thing shoots 1080p120!!! I didn't get that from the spec sheet, it seems to be a separate feature from frame rate
120p comparison with a7S:

Does the NX500 have this feature too?

Ouch, that means the NX500 uses a pixel-by-pixel crop of the sensor, with a total crop of 2.59x in UHD mode. No NX500 for me if that's the only option.
I'm not parting with my a7S yet, in any case. For me to switch over to the NX1, several things need to happen, and only one of them is in Samsung's hands:
* a wider gamma mode preserving all the DR from the sensor (or at least matching a7S+slog2)
* H.265 support in adobe, with good IQ and decent performance
* a speedbooster or lensturbo2 so I can use my vintage Leica-R glass with near-full-frame field of view
