Samsung NX1 getting log-like setting

That is a fantastic upgrade! Great work Samsung. Now if they added ProRes and CinemaDNG RAW file formats like the BM Pocket Camera did with firmware updates, which if BM did I don't see why Samsung couldn't, the Samsung NX1 would certainly become even more awesome. Any more reports though on the supposed ISO changing problem in full manual video mode?

I doubt you'll see ProRes on any Samsung products, given the rather antagonistic relations between them and Apple.

Higher bit rate internal recording, on the other hand, would come in handy.

WOW

That's what I call "listening". Well done Samsung.

I still love my a7S but it's been six months since every user said the record button was awkward and the custom buttons should be able to start/stop recording. This Samsung update is making every other camera maker either incompetent (BM seems to listen but takes ages to get stuff done) or unconcerned by whatever their customers think of their products (the list of *simple* stuff that should be fixed on the a7S is LONG; and I'm not talking timecode, I'm talking UI, like "crop mode should be an option for the custom menu").

Anyone knows what this means exactly: "you'll also find a new Pro Quality compression option for Full HD capture" ?

And being able to control autofocus speed? The NX1's too quick focusing seemed like the only weakness in their autofocus (for video) till now. Should allow for some sweet touchscreen rack focusing...with the right lenses of course.

If the dynamic range is increased this would make the camera much more appealing. Rolling shutter is still worse than the a7S which puts me on the fence still. Is rolling shutter something that cannot be improved in a firmware?

Indeed, RS is not the kind of thing I would expect to see sorted out in firmware.

RE: The pro quality for FHD: I understood this as "allows, for FHD, codec similar to what you get in 4K", which I guess was not the case before (no idea, never touched the NX1).

Sweet.

Is that a result of your communicating to them?

I'm not going to take full credit, but yes thank you McGee - I had a conversation with their marketing director. Thank you for his info.

Rolling shutter in 3840 x 2160 does seem to not be as bad as A7S in full frame mode. if i had time I'd do a test. check out my video coming out soon to show this.

Good work Ed.

Did the subject of 10bit come into conversation? If so, is it something they seemed receptive to? (I know it sounds greedy considering all they are already adding!)

Without a higher end camera segment to protect, Samsung could really come in and dominate the low budget market. Think i'm gonna have to go order myself an NX1

It should be a higher bit rate option for recording in FHD. Before it was HQ and Normal. The 4K has Pro, Hq and normal options. No idea what any of the Pro options bit rates are exactly or any other recording options for that matter.

They could still do a CinemaDNG Raw upgrade and be masters of the universe. Higher bit rates would also be a nice addition. I am sure they are getting a lot of feedback out from the wild. It is a great start though!

They are listening - try the new firmware in 2 weeks - then we can give them feedback and they will address or not address. Getting log is incredible. Don't get greedy. Also 10 bit is a hardware thing, not just firmware - which is just software.

Ed, do you know what we are getting is actual log (S-log or C-log) not log-like gamma similar to what GH4 currently has?

What an insane firmware update! Regarding the new log modes, here is what the IR article lists:

Two Gamma modes now provided for more control of aesthetic look of footage. Both gamma modes are designed for a more cinematic look.
  • C Gamma mode is a preset logarithmic color setting designed to deliver higher overall contrast.
  • D Gamma is a preset logarithmic color setting designed to capture a wider tonal range for increased dynamic range.

Also, this sounds interesting (among many, many interesting things in this update):

Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows PC:
  • Samsung will provide an SDK for Windows allowing developers to make remote access and control software for the Samsung NX1.

This could be the first step in doing justice to the "smart camera" name by begining what some people have wanted for a long time: more control of the camera's software. Andrew Reid actually mentioned that it will also allow apps for the camera's open source OS (Tizen), but I'm not sure if he's mistaken about that or if I'm misreading what he means. I have not been able to get a confirmation of this on any other website reporting this update. From the list item above, it seems to me like it will only be to allow external software to talk to and control the camera for now.

The rolling shutter is barely anything in 1080p mode but currently the image is pretty mushy. If the pro quality setting helps a lot then this might be very useful for movement shots. Then you have 4k for when the camera is locked off and you want maximum detail. Both modes with consistency of framing, colour and tonality.
