Samsung NX1 getting log-like setting

update...I converted my test files with Samsung movie converter and I got better results in terms of details than iffmpeg. Maybe I messed something with the latter.

Thanks for posting this video.

To me, the only thing that is annoying me with this camera is the excessive banding on gradients.
I hope that it is rather an issue of the converters than of 8bit h265. However, I'm noticing a little less banding artifacts when shooting 0-255 rather than 16-235.

Great dance clip! (youtube above)
Given I've seen some complaining about panasonic customer service re:GH4, wondering how Samsung rates. A lot of GH4 rentals around if yours has to go out for repair..think NX1s will show up in rental?

Wait, this thing shoots 1080p120!!! I didn't get that from the spec sheet, it seems to be a separate feature from frame rate

120p comparison with a7S:

Does the NX500 have this feature too?

Unknown, because like you said it wasn't mentioned in spec. I have no idea why! It is such a huge feature for it's price range.

If you switch to PAL in body you can also get a slightly less compressed 100fps mode (under 25p)

Really A gate that completely shuts off audio level after a silence? WEIRD! Heard of cams having auto gain or peak limiting..but that is one stray engineer.

Samsung lists it under Fast/Slow movie. No audio, but 0.25x 1080p/30 is the 120fps mode. Kind of like the Slow & Quick mode on the FS100. Most of the specs show the NX500 tops out at 60p, but I don't see Slow/Fast listed anywhere. It uses the same processor, I don't see why it couldn't - seems more like a Sony-style omitted feature to protect the cam above if its not there.

Just got a great deal on a barely used NX1 with the 16-50/2-2.8 lens and the battery grip for less than what I netted from the sale of my A7s. That lens and 4k internal (along with 15fps stills and a pretty impressive hybrid AF) sold me on the NX1. Its so good I'm no longer looking to buy a Shogun or 7q+ and waving goodbye to my A7s. Its been fun with the A7s, but the NX1 fits my needs better - since my grading skills are very basic and I'm not getting good skin tones with the A7s, I'm getting a look I like better in cam with the NX1. The ergonomics and menus are much better as well, its a mucho comfortable camera to hold and use. The Samsung 16-50 is sharper than the FE 24-70 and 1-2 stops faster depending on where you are in the zoom range. Its a perfect run-and-gun lens. The NX1 has much better battery life, a better rear screen (AMOLED is stunning), a better EVF, and no funky blue halos on highlights. The only place it falls short is the low light capabilities of the A7s.

Samsung has a winner in the NX1. I'm pre-ordering the NX500 to use it and the small 16-50 on a gimbal.

The constant firmware improvements are the icing on the cake, kudos to Samsung for recognizing the untapped potential and working to exploit it as much as possible. There's a ton of horsepower under the hood of the NX1, more good things appear to be on the horizon.

Edit, just found a video preview from B&H, shows the Fast/Slow option in the menu, its the third line in the pic below. Methinks it does have the 120fps mode.

Double Edit, a poster on Dpreview just demonstrated that the NX500 has a 1.6 crop (in addition to the 1.5x APS-c crop) in 4k mode, yikes! That makes my 16-50 about 38mm on the wide end. Major disappointment, this completely kills my enthusiasm for the NX500. Though I wonder if they can add that to the NX1.

Ouch, that means the NX500 uses a pixel-by-pixel crop of the sensor, with a total crop of 2.59x in UHD mode. No NX500 for me if that's the only option.

I'm not parting with my a7S yet, in any case. For me to switch over to the NX1, several things need to happen, and only one of them is in Samsung's hands:
* a wider gamma mode preserving all the DR from the sensor (or at least matching a7S+slog2)
* H.265 support in adobe, with good IQ and decent performance
* a speedbooster or lensturbo2 so I can use my vintage Leica-R glass with near-full-frame field of view

Amen. Let's hope they're listening...
