Samsung NX1 getting log-like setting

Biggest Problems Right Now:

-No h265 editing support in major NLE's, but when that changes the codec will be a plus not a minus. I've edited H265 a bit messing around in Blender (http://www.blender.org/) and my system could almost play the 4K h265 back in realtime, the 1080p was liquid smooth. So I think the file size advantage will be huge when Premiere/Final Cut support it.

-4K Rolling Shutter. 4K is a gorgeous image, but you need steady hands and to be aware of how your moving the camera when you film. It's no worse than the a7s though, and the camera's better grip really helps reduce the camera jitter effect.

I would love a mode that just crops the center 4K of the sensor and raises the crop factor if it gave me a faster readout without having to do that downscale!

-Noise in 1080p mode is bad over ISO 800, and over 1600 in 4k.

-Battery life could be better, but still wipes the floor with the A7 series. Also from experience does not significant more power when recording than when idle.

DR Better in 1080p : No reason I can think of, but I've taken a few shots that make it seem like it is. Probably hallucinating :) Will check.

One thing I have to mention, really love that you can use the wifi button (sits to the left of AF-ON) to start recording. Comfortable position that requires no moving of my grip to activate. God did I HATE the record button placement on my A6000.

Kind of shocked this camera is not better in low light.

I was as well. 4k is usable up to 3200 if you downscale to 1080, but yeah those are the best you can get with clean shadows. 1080p turns into an ugly blocky mess past ISO 1000 :(

Seems the BSI sensor is being used more efficiently in photo mode, Up to ISO 6400 is very clean and has great DR.

Wow! Really? I still remember when FILM, the Holy Grail of movie making, was very bad at low light too.... That's when somebody in Hollywood invented the light bulb.

This will be very close to what geffyb said, but here I go anyway...

Things that have to be sorted before I get an NX1 (or NX500), from most important to "actually I could live without that":
* I need a speedbooster-type adapter for my Leica-R lenses. LensTurbo II if possible, since it's quite good too and a lot cheaper than the metabones.
* Samsung has to bring out a slightly better gamma curve, to match my a7S+slog2 in terms of DR. I think it's definitely possible: the sensor seems to have more than what is used in video mode, and Samsung is improving the camera really fast.
* Adobe has to bring H.265 support into Premiere, with half-decent performance. I don't want to transcode every thing I shoot. Until this happens, the NX1 is a specialty thing for me: to be considered if I'm shooting some greenscreen, or some very fast action.

That's about it. And it's all looking relatively likely to happen in the next, say, 6 months. Then again, an a7S-II with IBIS that works fine in video would be compelling too.

Other things that would help putting a Samsung in my bag: if the NX500 is just as good as the NX1 in terms of image quality, and if Sigma brings out NX versions of the 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 lenses.

slashcam.de tested the NX1 a while ago

This is NX1 in UHD then downsampled to 1080p:

BTW the slashcam.de tests point to UHD being quite a bit sharper than the already-very-very-sharp 4K.

1080p is a little soft, but no false colour and very little aliasing. Need to test it further, 4K is best when sharpening is turned all the way down but it seems to soften the image in 1080p. Also seems it might have better DR than the 4K mode. I should send you some more samples, or you should rent the dang thing :)

Also, in regards to DR and sharpness I don't know if we can do full testing on it until the codec is supported by premiere/final cut.

Even though this is 120 fps, it's a good indicator. 1080p 24fps is a little sharper but a similar image quality: https://vimeo.com/118529486

How come this isn't in 1080p? I find anything can look good at native 720p because it's so small.

UPDATED FIRMWARE!

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/EV-NX1ZZZBQBUS

- Improved Drive speed under RAW, SAF, Continuous Normal setting
- Optimized [Fast / Slow Movie] option of FHD 23.98p Movie size (Better 1080p? Faster Framrates?)
- Improved Touch AF performance during Movie recording
- Fixed Smartphone synchronization of Time and Time Zone when you connect Bluetooth
- Improved the purple noise issue of UHD 23.98p Movie size in the dark condition. (YES!)
- Fixed RAW file EXIF GPS information when you use the Geotagging under Smartphone Bluetooth connection

Off Mirrorless Rumors, Samsung seems to want to produce a firmware update each month.

As, ask away!

Still really hoping for a 4K Sensor Crop mode (4K with better RS because the camera does not have to downscale). Also hope they include an option to turn off noise reduction in video recording, I'd rather have noise in my image than smearing at high ISO

here's a real world test I just did with the nx1:

looking much better - some noise issues, but I think this could be a winner

Hi Ed, can you please let us know which lens you used for the tests and if you had image stabilization turned on or off?

Awesome! The noise seems manageable. Might sell my 5D II + Zeiss 50mm 2.0 to get it with the kit lens. What lens are you using? Is it good?

REQUEST TO SAMSUNG TO IMPROVE NX1

Please add a sensor crop mode to create a higher quality 60P picture. Currently the camera skips lines to create the 1080 60P picture. I understand that 60P at 4K is beyond the ability of the camera. But with a sensor crop (perhaps 2.7K), you could produce a 60P picture without any line skipping. This would be a significant improvement and most welcome by everybody.

Today I tested 1080p at 24 and 60p and I noticed a lot of aliasing and mushy details that it reminds me of old dslrs.
Maybe I got spoiled by other cameras that I've been using in the last 2 years, but please any advise on setting the nx1 for a good HD is welcome.
Are you experiencing the same?
