Samsung NX1 getting log-like setting

That's helpful, John (just downloaded it) Additionally, any feedback on real-world experience is welcomed as well. Considering the GH4 (initial?) audio issues, that's worthwhile too.

I should hopefully get the NX1 by the second week of February. But tomorrow I have to go to B&H to get something and I will ask the guys at the Samsung display booth about the audio situation. I'll see what they will say.

Well..that would be weird..since in the manual is states
"In Shooting mode, press [m] g Mic Level rotate the navigation button or press [e/e] to adjust the mic level
touch Set."
And the recent firmware update mentions level control during recording.

According to your link, Ralph, it sounds like it might be a hardware/quality control issue.

Gather any insights, John?

Me? Well not much coming out lately but happy with what I see so far. Hopefully within 2 weeks I'll get mine. Fingers crossed and working hard on getting together the dollars to buy it. LOL!

I received mine today.
I did a very few tests after updating the camera to the latest firmware. In all honesty, I expected more from the DR Gamma.
It seems to me that dynamic range is quite limited. I'm not talking of video only, but raw stills as well.
Anyway, tomorrow hopefully I'll have more time to test it side by side with my A7R for pictures and A7S for videos and will post the results.
I hope I'm wrong

I guess you'll do a DR test against the a7S.

Most people go out, to a high-contrast place (sunlit and with some shadows), and shoot both cameras at the same settings. With cameras that have a lot of DR, like the a7S, this is unlikely to give you a meaningful result.

If it was me, I'd do it the following way: look for the highlight clipping point in one test (point the cameras to a wall lit sideways, so that there's clipping in both cameras in the brightest part of the wall, and there's a transition towards midtones in the not-so-lit part of the wall; shoot an exposure range ramp, e.g. changing aperture, and take not of when both clip at the same place of the wall; like "the a7S is clipping around here at f/5.6, and the NX1 clips in that same spot at f/8", or something like that), and look at shadow clipping point and noise in a different test (e.g. same setting, but with the light a bit farther and with 6 or 9 stops of ND on the lens; and look for something like "this area is usable on the a7S at f/16, and at f/11 on the NX1"). (with those "" examples, the a7S would have 2 stops better DR than the NX1, one in the highlights, one in the shadows).

(sorry if you're an experienced user and all this sounds condescending; maybe I shouldn't have posted it, but I'm genuinely interested by the NX1)

Samuel thanks for your advice.
I will do many tests in the next days and sure your point is really welcome :))

Samuel, has anyone sent you rolling shutter measurements in either mode (1080 and 4K) for this camera? I would love to see how it compares in real numbers with the others.

Ok, let's start with stills.
The sky has been cloudy all day here. A little ray of sun finally appeared and I shot these 2 pictures.
The cameras are:
-Sony a7r, with zeiss 24-70 at f5.6, 1/60, Iso 200
-NX1 with 16-50 at f5.6, 1/60, Iso 200
Both were custom white balanced with my checker.

My sekonic measures: f5.6 on internal wall, f2 on black sofa, f22 on far buildings/sea, 4 on the green armchair.
At first sight, you can see that there is a 1/2 stop difference between Sony (brighter) and Samsung (darker).

Then, in Lightroom I lowered exposure until the overexposure warning disappeared:
-2,9 stops for the Sony
-2 stops for the NX1

You can see how better the A7R retains details in the highlights, the sea and top part of the buildings.

Tomorrow hopefully I'll have the time to test DR on video with the A7S. I will follow Samuel's method and post asap.
Anyway, what shows from this first test is that sony still rules when we talk latitude.
Cheers
Diego

No, not at all. All I know is that it's relatively bad, but how bad it is exactly, no idea.
If anybody has the camera and 10 minutes to shoot a test and send it to me... instructions here.

@diegocervo:

That's a pretty good setting to test DR. I would shoot starting at f/5.6, which should have clipped background buildings in both cases, and ramp aperture all the way to f/22, to see when the buildings start to appear, and when the sofa starts to be not-usable.

Hi all,

here are the results of my test of A7s slog vs NX1 gamma DR
Both cameras have been WB with a grey card, although I see a yellow cast on the NX1.

Sony A7S, s-log2, color cinema, lens Zeiss 24-70 f4, range from f4 to f22, 1/50, Iso 3200, Hoya ProND16

Samsung NX1, resolution UHD downscaled to HD, lens 16-50 f2-2.8, range from f4 to f22, 1/50, Iso 200

Below are the screenshots from premiere and here is the link to download this test in prores 1080p

My impression is that the NX1 has 2 stops less on highlights than s-log2.

Also, it doesn’t seem to me that the nx1 is the kind of camera that hides plenty of details in the shadows which can be recovered in post. I think that DR is fairly distributed up and down middle gray, so it’s up to you to decide whether to crush blacks or blown out highlights.
So far I tested 100 and 200 ISO only. Still have to see how this camera handles details at higher ISOs.

Hope this helps
Diego

If the NX1 was 1/2 underexposed (darker), then I would think it is at a slight disadvantage. It would be similar to shooting with ISO 150 (or ISO140?) instead of ISO100. Is that correct?

yes that's right. Out of the box the nx1 is slightly darker than the a7r, even though ISO, aperture and shutter are set the same

Saw a test on another forum, the Sammy has less headroom in the highlights compared to a Sony a6000 sensor as well. More of the DR seems to be in the shadows. You have to protect the highlights a little more with the Samsung, lift the shadows and do a little NR.
